According to Melvin Forbes, the "pinch point" is by design. Yep. And while that may be effective, I prefer another approach to holding the scope tube securely in the rings. And it's not just the Talley LW's that have issues. Matter of fact, in an out-of-the-box-just-bolt-'em-on scenario, an aluminum ring that has some amount of flex will generally provide more contact than a steel ring that doesn't conform as easily. Stuff happens. Addressing/correcting things right from the start is always preferable to fixing stuff later. For example, there's a set of Warne steel bases here that cracked between the mounting screws (rear base for a Rem. 700)...... Good shootin'. -Al

I always dremel/file the pinch points off, cranked down farmer tight with blue loctite, and lap the shlt out of them.

My experience with LW Talley's mirrors yours. The NULA I used them the hardest was a .300 Win mag with a 4,5 14 Leupie. Planes , backpacks truculent horses 4 wheelers etc. No problems.
The recoil from the .300 is not a gentle kiss

If you don't lap, they're guaranteed to leave ring marks. I'll go another step when mounting the lowers....... After de-horning, I'll mount the lowers 1/8 turn off snug, and use the lapping bar as an alignment rod. Slide it 1 direction to expose 1 base screw, & lightly snug it. Then slide the rod the other direction to expose 1 screw in the other base, & lightly snug it. The back the other way to access the 2nd screw, & snug it, and then reverse to the 2nd screw on the other base. I go back & forth several times, tightening a little more each time, till farmer tight is reached. I then lap the lowers to satisfaction, then screw on the tops to clean them up. Clean & degrease everything, and mount the scope......done.

aalf: Your pic is worth a thousand words, buddy. These aren't Talley LW's but might give people a good idea of how little contact there can be. Bases have already been bedded so as to align up/down and front/rear. Lights not the best on the first one as I grabbed it with my phone. After lapping and bedding: The tops are same/same so get the same/same treatment. Before: After lapping and bedding:

Al,
I just pulled a scope that had been mounted in these rings, it would pass for NIB.
I also number tops & and bottoms, if you notice the 1's & 2's in the pic.
Even if I re-use rings on a different gun, I still do a light lap again, just to be sure.
While I generally never throw my shlt around on purpose, I've yet to bust a Talley.

PS.....Heat wave is here!!!

The fact that Talley LW's fail is not disputable. Plenty of pics to prove it and I've seen three with my own eyes. Why they fail may be due to lapping, over tightening, out of spec actions, etc.etc. But regardless, they fail. I've never seen any other ring fail (break), all subject to the same conditions. I had Burris Signatures fail where the bottom ring attaches to the base one time. I use Talley's now. Never a problem. I always lap them.

I dont wear flatbills or skinny jeans, and do shoot and like Remington 700s... 🤪
And yet, I’ve seen 3 sets of Talley LWs crack on good hunting bud’s rifles. Seeing that was enough that I no longer have any in use.
I've seen more well-shot game lost with TSXs than any other premium bullet.

Have had Talleys on Remingtons and Kimbers, 223 to 300 Ultra. Have had 3 sets crack. two sets were torqued as per Talley specs, one was farmer tight. The set that cracked on a 223 Montana was a light duty rifle, never seeing hard use. A Remington was basically a safe queen, and the Montana 7wsm saw hard use strapped to a backpack most of the time. That one went from being less than half MOA to 4+ MOA in between two subsequent days of shooting.
Why pack all that messy meat out of the bush when we can just go to the grocery store where meat is made? Hell,if they sold antlers I would save so much money I could afford to go Dolphin fishing. Maybe even a baby seal safari.

Well boys and girls, it's looks like I was wrong.... I was under the impression that lapping & de-horning was the answer to Talley woes. I just pulled a gun out of the safe, and what should I see, but a Talley had split whilst in storage. Let the 99igger pile continue......
