Trivia question, were the 50's 99f factory drilled for both the peep sight and scope bases?

Yes. Tang holes ended at the 1 mill mark.

I beg to differ. I have a 99F from 1955 that is factory drilled and tapped for scope mounting but not for a tang sight. 300 Savage. Serial Number is 7603XX

I think generally speaking pre 1960 F model had both factory scope mounting and factory tang sight holes. The E may not have had tang sight provisions ot a counter windor for remaing cartridges.
On the early F does it have a counter hole?

No tang safety 99s had tang peep sight screw holes. So the 1960 F’s and DL’s did not have them.
Except for special order guns, every 1895/1899/99 from 1895 to 1959 had tang screwholes for peep sights.

And to further confuse the matter, I saw a mid-60's 99E with tang sight holes. They looked factory.

There were 99F's made without tang site holes. It's been discussed before. Rick has a picture of one where, underneath the finish, you can see "do not drill" written on the tang.
