Great story and pics, Ptarmigan! Thanks for sharing.

Congrats to you and the kid on many accounts.

That’s kind of a long story I guess. Abbreviated version is that he moved here from Guinea-Bissau to go to college 20+ yrs ago. Met my SIL, got married and had two kids. My SIL being a bi-polar alcoholic was probably too much to deal with and they divorced. He went into the military and served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. I know he tried to keep in touch as much as he could, but my SIL threatened him with all kinds of stuff. He’s now remarried and some kind of economics/finance professional outside of DC. He talks to his son pretty often and will have him for a month this summer. At the time though, Miles (my nephew) knew us much better and we have boys of similar age. Whatever happens down the road is up in the air, but everyone just wants what’s best for the kid.

A congrats to the kid, but I'd not be inclined to start one with a handgun. Most Hunter Ed programs have little to no focus on handguns. Do be sure he's aware of potential forcing cone issues.

He’s been shooting rifles and handguns a lot since he moved here with us. I’m more than confident that he is fine with a single action .22 that he can strap on his side for grouse and bunnies. Firearm safety is not an option in my world. My kids know it and so don’t the guys I hunt with, otherwise I don’t hunt or shoot with them.
