I absolutely love this attitude, That's why I now watch TV on a Sharp Aquos 70" LCD TV that I spent $54.00 on to get working again. Computers too just keep throwing that schit away folks.
and they are like smartphones, they spend a lot of time tracking what you're looking at.
You only have to be smarter or more informed than the item your trying to operate.

My son is a research-before-you-buy addict and he can tell you details of every set available if you are looking for something... what he found is there are different levels or grades of big screens and break down somewhat in the lowest levels having a 5000-6000 type model numbers, middle of the road are the 7000 type model numbers, and the higher grades start at the 8000 type model numbers- then you get into the super expensive sets like OLED and some of the newer super duper HD touch yourself quality picture sets with built in Alexa, Fire Stick, etc....
For the most part Costco covers the higher end models- a few 7000 series, a lot of 8000 series and lots of the best of the best . IMO this is why their prices seem a bit high but you get what you pay for and their additional in store warranty is hard to beat. If you are a member you can get on their email specials list and they will occasionally have killer deals on some of their sets. Their sound bars are usually priced very well also, IMO- for the quality you get.
But hey, half the fun is going into an electronics store and turning up all the TVs and sound bars as loud as you can and leaving the area though, right?
Oh yeah- get a good surge arrestor for your house and you won't have to replace so much electronics. As an electrician I saw some incredible electronics damage to peoples' home electronics, ranges, refrigerators, you name it due to lightning. These days everything has electronics installed and home insurance quite often doesn't cover damage to all of it...

For the most part TV's are now disposable. The cost of parts (everything is on the Motherboard) I actually know how to repair them, but the cost is not worth the effort unless it is a very big built in expensive one. Get a surge protector, most multi outlet corded power strips have one built in and most likely you will need more than just the two outlets behind a TV set anyway. They are much cheaper than a TV set.. The cheaper ones are OK, but the quality comes in at a higher price point. Personally I have a Sony, about 10 years old and still going fine.

I hate the new led/oled pictures. We have a Panasonic plasma 50” from 2011. It has crapped twice. 200 to fix it. I just bought a 55” of same type, 125 out the door off of FB marketplace. Now I have a spare.

Costco definitely if you are a member and use their visa card to buy. Toss in the free 4yr warranty, cash back, concierge service. Shop online and in-store before deciding.
With the multitude of free applications for watching whatever whether or not you have Roku won't matter much.
For $500 you'll get a nice upto 55in 4KHDTV if something is on sale/special.

Haven't had one in several years. I don't miss it. I'd say wait on black friday or something and see if you remember to buy one.

went to costco today to pick up some steaks and I remembered this thread.
The cheapest TV they had on display at my costco was a 65" for $749.
I don't think that was as bad price, but by comparison , Walmart has a 65" Vizio for $469

As far as I know they all come equipped to spy on the household now. Nowadays pretty much any and everything that communicates via the internet regardless whether hardwired phone lines, cable or satellite can be equipped to function as such.
