I asked Jim if he had any kosher beef for sale and he told me he ran out of Jewish cows. I could have sworn I saw picture of jims cows with a beanie on their heads....rubbing their hooves together with a devilish grin on their face directing the other cows to do their bidding.....might ask again....bob

I am doing some crude calculations and obviously there are variables involved but here's what I come up with for price per pound of actual packaged beef.
1400lb steer and butcher combined price around $2k?
And what you get 500lbs of meat?
$4/lb straight across for what goes in the freezer. Maybe $5?
Curious to hear what Bob says.
I might be low balling the steer price?
Neighbor thought he was about $600 for butcher fee, I figure $1/lb for the critter but that is probably low. Sam.....$500 hundred cut and wraped.......75 cents on the ticket......comes out mark of the devil 666,666 ..bob

Neighbor thought he was about $600 for butcher fee, I figure $1/lb for the critter but that is probably low. We sell at $3 a pound hanging weight. We’re cheaper by $.50 to a $1 than many around here. Slaughter is $75 a head I believe. We cover that. Most folks charge the buyer (buy 1/2 a beef, pay 1/2 the slaughter). Cut and wrap- We used a place the first two years that charged $.59 a pound. This year we changed butchers and it cost $.79 a pound. It was worth it. Typically it’s closer to $6-$8 a pound by the time it’s in your freezer. For our folks anyway.

Of course, they have the cuts for a "quick" sale, looking kinda brown however. Rather buy from someone I have met. Rather they get the money as apposed to all the middle men.

Based on this thread, I looked at some farm to table options up here.... $31.00 for a ribeye steak. damn. I want to support the locals (and I still might), but that's a hard $$$ to swallow. Also available is $244.00 for a 10 lb box of chuck and sirloin.

Well, I am hoping farm to table dealing with a true framer, are better than "Omaha" steaks. Maybe not. They are not bad, relatives bought some. Price per pound was not that good..

You need a half a beef? Maybe we should chip in next year and drive up to MT, tie it in with some hunting and fishin? I could use a half a lamb too.

. . . Local grass fed is the way to go, . . . I can really tell the difference in taste between feedlot and grass fed. Grass fed vs Gain fed . . . no competition. Marbling is the result of the grain. Marbling is what gives beef its great taste.

Neighbor thought he was about $600 for butcher fee, I figure $1/lb for the critter but that is probably low. Local guy raises Angus and will sell you a whole or ½. Sends it to the Mennonites and they butcher and wrap it for you. All together it is $4lb. Not bad at all👍

Marbling is what gives beef its great taste. I wouldn’t agree with that. Grocery counters are full of beef that’s well marbled, tender, and tasteless. It’s the main reason I’m playing with raising my own.

Marbling is what gives beef its great taste. Grass fed with a little grain to finish will have marbling with flavor. Feedlot marbling is pretty tasteless. Try some grass fed, not scrub brush fed sometime
