Tell us again just how phuggin better Texas is than Yankee country! Please. How much smarter, how you all do things so much better!
Thing is, I like Texas. Just get tired of the BS.
Right now, your electrical system sounds like a match to California's a few years ago. I don't know. ERCOT controls a grid in the middle of Texas. Mostly where Yankees have migrated, but it does effect some normal people. We don't use it in East Texas. Or West or Noth or South. And we still dont have philly. That was low! Sure our totalitarian governor has shuttered businesses and stole and election, but to bring up Philly? Philly is that uncle no one ever mentions. I know Texas a bit. Never lived there, but I bet I have traveled over more of it than the average Texan. Fine state. If able to freely choose where to live, probably wouldnt be Texas. BUT it would definitely be the top 5. Batten down your hatches, those changes are coming to a town near you. Austin is already there.

The problem with ERCOT was they had too many non Texan's as members.
I believe that problem is being addressed this session.

What will Texas do when summer is here? When I lived in Dallas in the summer we used air conditioning. Used more electric in the summers than any other time. Whenever we have colder than normal temps down here in SWFL the power company cautions folks that their heat feature on their hvac unit is not Very efficient as their AC feature and to expect to have a larger bill due to the heater using so much power. My guess is places like Texas have similar systems.
Life can be rough on us dreamers.

What I like about Pa is they have marked public hunting lands and free shooting ranges all over and still have not too bad gun laws. I think NY State is prettier but the laws on everything suck.
Lord I hope Texas stays a red state.

The biggest problem we have in Texas is the damn Yankees and communists that have moved here. I have a solution.
Born here: Use all the electricity you want. Use all the water you want. Not born here: 1000Kw and 30 gallons per month.
That would stop the migration.

So we've established in this thread that ERCOT does not cover East, West, North, South, or Central Texas, but their website says they deliver 90% of the power in the state. Apparently ERCOT is the fat girl everyone likes to bone but doesn't want their friends to see them with.

I guess the OP is a little clueless as to what happened during that cold blast and why it keeps having an impact. ERDOT asked China Joe's administration to waive a requirement that "renewable" sources be used and to allow them to dust off conventional sources to cover the increased load. China Joe said NO and they said if the state did use it anyways the price per megawatt hour would be hugely increased. That caused a few local instances in which the price spiked and if the OP actually read the article he would see the 10,000% increase was in one small area and not the whole state and the sole reason for that increase was the China Joe Administration.
As to bashing TX, I spent well over half of my Navy career in VA and the only state in the nation that I despise more than VA is NJ. The OP can keep that cesspool, I'll stay in Amarillo.

Why would you think I'm butt hurt? I was just summarizing the interesting things I learned in this thread.

Started quite the chit storm just poking fun at the way some like to criticize others. (In fun, I assume)
Thing is, it seems to have hit some nerves under thin skin.
Would like to really poke now, but never pay enough attention to the agitators to know if I got any of them twisting now. Ashamed of myself, hate to waste an opportunity for a good payback prodding.
As to the OP, the situation sucks.
As to the hellish price spikes, if my understanding is correct, it's the same thing that hit here awhile back.
Electrical generator choice. People jumped to companies that offered super good prices at low cost times. With the understanding that prices could jump under certain conditions. When the conditions hit, people with normal $150/month bills got $3500 bills. And cried and complained.
Sorry, you signed the contract. You only focused on that low number. Remember ARMortgages? Same thing.
REA runs adds for us to "Do The Electrical Shift" on hot summer days. Avoid using any electricity possible until after 6pm. Our absolute peak hour/year is in the summer. The demand during that hour seriously affects the power generation price charged the co-op for the entire year.
Considering that, if you sign a lowball wholesale price/kilowatt based on cost, the provider is forced to pass on those fees. Just business.
