Atkins writes about shooting and alcohol at great length in his book "Unrepentant Sinner." He got pretty scientific with it.
Camp Perry and similar matches had "drinking tents" for a long, long time. We used hired target pullers for the state HPR championships, 1st and 2nd relay had about 3 hrs in the middle of the day open so we would drive off base for lunch. This was Stones bay Camp Lejeune so we go to a restaurant on the beach, mid 90's time frame. The guy that drank the most at lunch was state champion later that day. Didn't drink a lot maybe 3 beers. He probably would have won anyway, he was a great shooter.
