Predicted 40F low last night when I checked before finally setting out the pepper and tomato starts: When I got up this morning I thought they'd about nailed it, even though I live 15 miles or so from their station at the airport. Figured everything was copacetic. Went out to start the sprinkler on the lawn, I'll be damned, frost on some of the grass and ice on the hose. Decided to check this morning's actual "official" temp, as that 39F is from my sending unit 5' up a tree in the shade and therefor protected from frost somewhat. So, 36F in their weather station box 5' off the ground makes it understandable why there was ice in my birdbath this morning:

I think the plants might be OK. They hadn't turned black overnight at least. I'll see later today when it hits 90F Jugs of water warmed up in the sun yesterday, help to keep it a little warmer in the bed at night for heat loving veggies.

We had a nip of frost last Thursday, and 94 degrees on Monday. We put the squash and pumpkins in late (dang manager's wife decided to have a baby.... who orders a baby in hay season?) -- anyhow, that turned out to be a fortuitous delay, as they would have probably been frost bit pretty hard.
And FWIW, the climate between Alturas and Southeast Idaho is almost the same.

Are those just hundreds of small clear cuts? Lewis, I don't know what image you looked at, but I'm guessing what your seeing is sagebrush "flats" and burn scars from fires. There is some logging around here, but not enough to make many dents in the forests, which below about 5500' are mostly juniper. Many of the "good" trees, pines and firs, are on Forest Service land, and every time a harvest is proposed they get sued and they're lucky to even get burned trees out. Post up a link of what you looked at and I can give you a better idea.

You know what happened to thought though, right? He "thought" he farted but he shat in his pants. I looked at the plants this afternoon when I got back from a trip to the big town in OR. Pretty sure I lost most of them.

This pepper may recover, and most of the other 9 are similar, but I'll have lost 2 weeks or more growth. Yippee. Almost all the tomatoes are this bad.................or worse. A trip to the nursery for more starts is in order I think.
