Its about time for a new thread. I just ran into a batch of the 30 gr Bergers at a good price and am working up a load in my .17 Rem with them.
Anybody got any suggestions for a load in that cartridge or anyone got any experience on fur with them?
My intention is to use them on pigs but some fur occasionally walks in front of the gun.

24gr 760 or 22gr 8208xbr with federal 205, OAL 2.170, just plain kills and easy on fur.

You trying to work up an elephant load or something? Sheesh
I’m no help, my gun probably doesn’t have the twist for them so I’ve never bought any. I’ve heard good things and expect a full report though.

26.6gr. of H414 and an oal of 2.2. Rem. brass and Rem. 7 1/2 primer. This load works with the Nagel 30gr. and Blackhole Bullet 30gr. FB.
This bullet and load works for all game up to an including the Ceratosaurus.

Killed several coyotes with my 17-204 and 30gr Nagels and 30gr golds. Both were decent on coyote furs. Didn't have any runners

Good to know. Ive only shot 2 coyotes with the .17 Rem and I was using a Hornady 25 gr HP...both were runners and made it about 50 yards.

Yes, exactly the same powder in a different-labeled jug--the reason Hodgdon recently "discontinued" 760.
Another powder that works great in the .17 Remington, with a similar burn-rate, is Ramshot Big Game. The big differences I've found are that Big Game burns cleaner, and is less temperature sensitive.
Of course, finding any BG right now could be a problem--unless you know somebody with a good supply.

Hornady's was back in 70's when the 17 was just getting started. I thought the Rem. sp's worked better back then. I went to 25gr. Berger Match with great success and then to the 25gr. Nagel with equal success. I understand that many use the Hornady's. Those are generally available and cheaper than the custom bullets and that may be the reason so many use them. If I was still pelt hunting the custom bullets is where I would be.

Actually have that loaded up to try tomorrow. It works well with the 25 grainers, hopefully it'll do the same with the 30's

boatanchor,
Yep--except we're both wrong. The only thing discontinued was jugs with H414 labels....

Just got back from the range. Tried near max loads of H4895, 4064, and CFE223...
They ALL worked well.
I hate it when that happens...

That’s an easy choice to make. CFE is the only ball powder of the three. Screw trying to get Lincoln logs in the necks of 17 cases.
