DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — At least four ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirates broadcast warnings Tuesday that they had lost control of their steering under unclear circumstances as authorities reported “an incident” was underway in the area.
It wasn’t immediately clear what was happening off the coast of Fujairah in the Gulf of Oman.
The vessels — oil tankers called Queen Ematha, the Golden Brilliant, Jag Pooja and Abyss — announced around the same time via their Automatic Identification System trackers that they were “not under command,” according to MarineTraffic.com. I wonder, are these ships "fly-by-wire"? Can their control systems be jammed remotely? Are they connected to the internet and hackable?

Would have to be a marine drone and only a few countries are equipped with that. This story does not make sense as reported

Would not an air drone, similar to ones used by out military to take out terrorist vehicles and "wedding parties, be capable of carrying a small torpedo instead of an air to ground missile?
Is it far fetched to think Iran or one of the other players over there has that type of system? Perhaps not as sophisticated as US models, but damage to a rudder could be performed?

Or - given the op tempo most ships and shipping companies have been on the last 18 months - maintenance was deferred and it just broke.
Lots of old iron pressed into service to take advantage of shipping rates lately.

Lots of old iron pressed into service to take advantage of shipping rates lately. 4 ships just broke at the same time in the same area? If this is true the 5th fleet is on scene now, not that we would know or they would say. That all said this seems to be ringing not what is being said. But hey it's fun playing army anyway, right?
