My son and his wife own a restaurant here. He has a prep cook making over $60K. His lowest paid employee makes about $18 an hour. 5 quit last week. He has hired two. It's a disaster.
On the other hand, they are making money hand over fist, with every week higher than the one before.

There's certain areas of the economy that have based their business model on taking advantage of the high availability of potential hires. Retail, food service, trucking, some agriculture, some construction, among otherrs. By hiring part time only, no benefits, not steady schedules, no path to improvement, or piece rate, they were able to keep labor costs low. Companies like UBER are built on this model. Nothing immoral or illegal, but a vulnerable business strategy.

Today, someone who is a good employee and has any sort of ambition at all can step up to a full time career position, full benefits often without even making the phone call. Truckers used to have to wait, sometimes daily, for four, five hours(unpaid, mostly), before they were loaded and or unloaded at a distribution center of warehouse. The grocery stores and food processors that kept their costs low by abusing the truck drivers they relied on now are complaining about a "driver shortage".

Restaurants hired people part time, and the worst of them would require staff to be "available" in case of an unexpected peak, without compensation. Irregular schedules so people could not work two jobs. Same with retail. Throw employees some hours here and there, but never allow them to grow into a full time position.

There's no shortage. There's an excess of middle fingers shown to the companies that have built their business model on the availability of cheap, abundant labor that had nothing but crappy options.

I'm in shipping/logistics and you wouldn't believe what flatbed drivers are making now days. It's unreal.

Had one guy in the other day and he said he was making $5.00/mile to run up here from Arkansas and most times driving back empty still getting paid $5.00/mile. Any load he picks up is cream on top. The load I gave him, was $3,800 to go back to AR. Granted, there are Broker fee's but those guys are making bank right now.

No doubt, it's close to bizarre.

But when you were booking loads for $1.35 one way a few years ago, you didn't think much of it, and those guys were working for less than minimum wage. And a lot of them gave the middle finger salute because of it. And ain't coming back, because they are making good money and sleeping next to momma every night.

Honest question...why are there jobs when no new jobs are being created? Unemployment benefits ran out, what are all the people that quit doing for money? Only jobs I see around here are $18 an hour...who can live on that?

I love how the article does not mention vaccine mandates, nor any losses in the healthcare industry and yet this is somehow Biden's fault because in the last month some employers have enacted a vaccine mandates. Let me guess. When this was happening 5 months ago, people were quitting because there might be a vaccine mandate someday and they wanted to start protesting early.

I guess cutting off federal unemployment didn't give you the results you wanted so now you are blaming the mandate. Perhaps we need to start thinking of another excuse when the mandate excuse doesn't work out for you,

Much like a month back when YOU were saying there is NO inflation?
And now you admit that there is but it MUST be Trumps fault?

I wasn't booking loads a few years ago. Changed professions and I don't have anything against them making good money. Good for them, I says.

Fair questions, if 4.3 million people quit their jobs, what are they doing for income? If you quit are you eligible for unemployment benefits? How many jobs were created during that period of time? How many people changed to a different job? With all the employers looking for workers, how many went to work somewhere else? How many quit over the vaccine mandate? I don't think we are getting the whole story here.
