There are some who believe that the events described in the Revelation already happened in the First Century AD. That would actually be impossible for a few reasons. One of which is that we are told that the whole world watches these events unfold. This wouldn't be possible until the arrival of technology and the news media

Rev 17:8 ...when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. the Beast - Rome ruled by Caesars.... 'was' started with Julius, 'was not' when they killed him,. and 'yet is' with the reign of Augustus and continued through the prophecy of Revelation...............
Rev 17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. Titus was a son of Vespasian..... the 8th is of the seven!
Rev 17:18 the woman is 'the great city' Chapter 11 - the great city wherein our LORD was crucified

A computer or a system can't sit in the temple or declare itself to be God. It's a man. RC, this is a great passage for a couple of reasons. The church was , apparently, upset that they may have missed the coming, citing they may have heard about it, or GOTTEN A LETTER!?!?!?!? What was their understanding of the NATURE of the 'coming'??? You could be alive on earth afterword!?!? The other 'he takes his seat in the temple of GOD' the 'man of lawlessness'. True a computer cannot do it, and neither can a LAWLESS man TODAY!!! Today the Temple of GOD on earth is a spiritual place, it is the church......... When Paul wrote to the Thessalonians there was a 'Temple of GOD' that a man could walk into and sit down, it was the Temple in Jerusalem. One of the Caesars DID have his 'likeness' hung in the temple, which caused a great revolt among the Jews, and the Caesars were thought of, viewed as and worshipped by Romans as diety...........

That is true, additionally the nation of Israel was referred to in the OT as heaven and earth, and 'the world'............ If Revelation is all about the destruction and the end of Jerusalem and the Israelite nation, then 'the world' certainly would have seen it................

Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666.” This number actually indicates a name.
