I went Montana. Even topped with a heavy scope (relatively speaking) it's a joy in the hands. A fly rod for shooting. Best rifle I've ever owned. Never mind the meat dink - only pic I have with the rifle.

I’ve an itch for a light’ish 7-08. All stainless is preferred. 22” barrel, max. Would like to be 7.25ish lbs with scope mounted. I’m leaning toward a used, 90’s era 700 and put it in a good stock. Have also been shopping new but outside of Tikka, not much is floating my boat on the new market. I have one Tikka, and shot several. I like them, but hoping to find a true short action. I like the Winchester EW, but thinking I’d end up a bit heavier than my target.
Not too concerned with shooting this rifle past 500 yards so heavy bullets and twist rates are not a big factor. It would be nice to get a 140 to the lands and keep it in the mag box though.
Suggestions? I have a Sako 75 in 7mm-08 that I love. SS/synthetic with 22 inch barrel (actually 21 and change). Great shooter with a number of different loads I’ve been reading a bit on the Sako models and may be leaning that way at this point. The Sako models are little more than I wanted to spend. However, watching Gunbroker lately, 90’s era stainless 700’s are routinely bringing $1K+.
Don't speculate when you don't know, and don't second guess when you do.

Sako's are great; I have a few. Do NOT buy an 85 with the "Duratouch" or whatever the call it stock. They devolve into a sticky mess and Sako/Beretta will not do a thing for you. Have a friend in that situation. I have a Hunter Stainless 75 in .270, great guns; thought the Finnnlight 75 is not that "light"

I just picked one up in 7mm-08(Kimber, that is) for a little over $700 out the door. Put a Leupold vari-x III 3.5-10x40 with B&C reticle on it in Talley lightweights (I know, junk/on junk/in junk). Loaded up some 150gr scenars in lapua brass with some RL-17, and fired several different 4 shot groups at 100yds under 3/4”. Chrono’d them at 2860, with the final load. I figure stuff should die ok, maybe.
Oh, and believe it or not, deer bite. Fairly hard.

I'll 5th or 6th the Kimber Montana suggestion.
I've had two MT 7-08's, and while I found them both very picky/inconsistent with 140's, they both loved 150's. People talk about "Kimber Roulette" - I've had nearly 20 of them, and all would shoot something consistently .8 moa or less, and some of them shot a lot of stuff sub moa. If you're going to dictate to a Kimber what it should like, you'll probably be disappointed, but if you'll be flexible minded and let the rifle guide you, you'll find something to love.

Montana. Older version. Non threaded, smoother version dark gray stock, not the “shark skin” finish of the version before they went to the threaded muzzles n green color.

What’s wrong with the threaded barrel? They’re probably better built that the old ones actually. All mine are threaded and they’re all bad ass.

Not a thing wrong with them at all, and I never said there was! I was simply describing the one I had for AK. I know some guys don’t like them for aesthetic reasons, but they don’t bother me. It just happened to be an older version that I stumbled actoss in the used section of the local gun shop. My 260, and 280 ai are both unthreaded too, but with the more recent, more “textured” stock finish. I can’t say a bad word about any of them, they all shoot!

I had a smith turn down the rough over-large collar, but a custom mandrel had to be made, as Kimber uses an odd thread spec

2nd Kimber Montana. Mine is scary accurate with plain ole Hornady American Whitetail with 139 interlocks at 100 yds. So much so I can't reload better. Same here. Thats good to hear about the hornady, while I do reload for my 708, I scored 4 boxes of what you mentioned at Academy just to have in case reloading supplies dont get better. Cant tell you the last time I've seen a lb of varget locally and I'm low on my nosler 120s.

I'm kicking myself for not buying one of the 700 mountain rifles with the b&c stocks before remington closed shop on them a couple years ago. They could be had for 800ish.

If you can find one Browning X bolt micro medallion 6.1 lbs with Talley rings. Mine shoots under an inch all day long.
