"O rings some time melt on and can be a PITA to remove"
In my 62 years of changing oil filters I have never had an oil filter gasket melt. Nope, but if they're over tightened, as they tend to be with a wrench, often, the o-ring becomes dislodged from its track & stays attached to the filter housing. You'd be amazed at the number of oil leaks, we've fixed, that ended up being double gasketed filters !

You'd be amazed at the number of oil leaks, we've fixed, that ended up being double gasketed filters ! If your oil is getting hot enough to melt an oil filter O ring, you got bigger problems than a nut or not on the can... A big YEP on double O rings. The quick change oil monkeys do it all the time or forget to torque the pan plug.

K&N HP series is a male......has a nut...usually $15 lately K&N PS series is female......w/o nut..usually $7-8 The nut can be really handy...yea like the 3.4L V6 Tacoma...PIA to change filter Remember too...nut is for loosening only....not for tightening https://www.knfilters.com/chevrolet/silverado-2500-hd/6.0l-v8-gas/2002/

I've spent a lot of money on tools to remove that filter! Drive a screwdriver through it and turn. I've watched my dad do that quite a few times. I've been lucky and haven't ever needed to but he gave me the learning on it

I wouldn't worry about it... or even bother changing the oil... or pretty much anything. Spark plugs, coils, tranny... will be blowing up on ya before long. No hard feelings, but that era Ford is infamous for a laundry list of stuff going bad... I personally know of THREE down at the moment. Remember the old Henry Ford quote... "Sell them cheap, but kill them on the parts."

Hand tighten, hand loosen. Yep. Those sharp-toothed oil filter pliers can lend a hand too. I've used them in the past for all sorts of things you can't get a good grip on.

With all the issues with the cam phasers on those 5.4's, I'm not using anything but Motocraft oil and filters. Those nut jobs are pricey and I'm a big proponent of getting rid of the oil, filter and dirt early. Sears marketed a wrench head that fit a 3/8" drive socket wrench that had three steel fingers that cammed tighter into the filter the harder you turned it. Way cleaner than the screwdriver trick and a tight filter never beat me using that tool.
My other auto is a .45

No pain, no gain, though right?

Our 2006 F150 crankcase filter is a bear to get off.
I looked at a K&N yesterday that did not have a nut.
Any brands that do? Was it that hard for you to twist off or was it a access issue ???
