Last time I went on Cades Cove, people were stopping to look at deer. I was done with it after that. Once you're in you're committed though.

That combined with an effect of radiational cross sectioning of light called Mie Scattering gives it a smoky look.

It closes at dark-thirty and in inclement weather.

I live nearby part time, Slums description is accurate for the majority of the hours SMKW is open.
It is much better however now that they moved the 'gun' section to where it is [used to be at the front entrance].
