It's been years since I've been there but the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City is great. It's right on the Appalachian Trail and has a good outdoor store and restaurant on site. It also has good mountain biking and seasonally, great kayaking and rafting.

... the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City is great. It's at its very best at the tail end of a multi-day backpacking hike off the AT and you're hungry for a meal that didn't come out of a foil pouch.

I just did a dayhike from Stecoah Gap to the NOC and had their Nantahala Gorge club sandwich with a slice of apple pie ala mode for dessert.
