With the low value or unsellable pelts this year you might want to do some testing with various bullets. Learning to sew/repair bullet damage can go a long way also. I've sold a fox that leather side out looked like a Franken Fox, but fur out pulled top dollar. I did it as a lesson to a newbie about putting up fur as he had been taking some big hits selling in the round. I did tell the buyer to slide his hand up in the fox, he gave me top dollar anyways for being honest with him.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Used to use the Hornady 25 grain HP in my 17 Rem on coyotes occasionally and it always surprised me how much damage it did. They didn't always punch through, but when they did it looked like an explosion happened inside the dog... I know it isn't a 22-250 , but it goes to show nothing is absolute. Depending on where you shoot them can make a big difference in my experience. I've never kept furs so I'm not picky about where I shoot them as long as they go down quickly.
BSA, what has been your experience with the 53 grain Vmax? I haven't used any of them on coyotes yet, but possibly in a couple weeks. I'm going by reports of guys I know who use them and seem to like them a lot... I've had good results with 40gr BT's so far in the 223 and 223AI and they are spectacular on Rock Chucks in the 22-250 and the 223AI... I also have some 50 and 55 grain BT's I'm going to experiment with soon, at least when I can get back to the range ....

There is NO fur friendly 22-250 bullet try a sierra 1365, I have shot 100's with a 1365, the guy I hunt with sometimes probably has over 500 kills with a 1365, if you want to shoot 40's try the sierra 1310, sierras have about twice the jacket thickness as a vmax. I also think a ballistic tip would work, they have a chunk of copper in the rear of the bullet that will punch through bone.

About 10 years ago I bought some Winchester bulk pack .22-250's with a 45 gr HP that were on sale. The first coyote I shot was on the run. Poor shot on my part. Hit it at about 30 yards away from me, in the belly. Completely disemboweled it. From The rib cage to the sphincter. What a mess it made. No salvageable fur. A few years later DENNISINAZ and I ran a few rounds over his chronograph. 4200 FPS ! WOW.... no wonder. They're tough on critters.

I shot some of those years ago when they came in the 40 or 50 round bulk pack. They were explosive to say the least. They would literally vaporize Pdogs and crows. Huge holes were the norm on coyotes for me.
To the OP. Back when I shot a 22-250 for coyotes I had the most consistent results with the 50 NBT. I wasn’t saving hides but they rarely blew one up badly with solid hits.

Have you tried them in a 223? Also, how hard do you push them in your 22-250?

40g NBTS at 3200 out of my 221 almost always exit, I imagine at 22-250 velocity they would exit as well.

I've had great luck on fur with 53 grain sierra matchkings at around 3750 out of a .220 swift, often you'll have to search for entry and exit holes and if they are more obvious they are rarely larger than a quarter. Of course if you hit spine or leg bone all bets are off. The 55 grain hornady works ok too, with most holes not larger than a silver dollar or so, but you will have the occasional mess.

40gr NBT's rarely exit at 4000fps out of my 22-204 with just bits of jacket under the farside hide.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

My favorite coyote bullet from a 22-250 is the nosler 50BT pushed as fast as I can get them…usually 3800fps or so. Usually pin prick going in, fully blow to pieces inside the coyote and a small exit where the solid base pokes through. I’ve used some 55BT too and the seemed to do the same thing but I’ve not used them enough to say for sure. I would guess that the 40BT would be the same as the 50. I’ve seen too many 22 and 6 mm v max blow huge holes in them on the entrance and stopped using them.

I've shot enough coyotes to have a decent fix on this. The question of 53 grain VMAX keeps coming up. Never used it in 22-250 but in .223 they always exit from my model 600. From an 8 twist AR 15 they mostly don't. Twist is important, more so than you might think.
I've used quite a few 40 blitkings and they mostly exit. I really don't trust the 22-250 with fur

My 22/250 fur bullet is the 52 grain Berger Varmint, about 1 in ten exit on rib hits, deadly on frontals.
For factory ammo the 45 grain white box Winchester has been great, about as good as it gets.
The worst has been the 40 grain V Max, unless you want a wound 1/2" deep and a foot wide. Couldn't even make those work in a .223.
Life begins at 40. Recoil begins at "Over 40" Coincidence? I don't think so.

My question is are you looking for a “fur friendly” bullet because you are serious about getting every penny you can for the hides? (Sewing holes, stretching, fleshing, drying, etc.) or are you just looking to keep holes minimal to have them tanned for yourself?
The market is crap either way right now, and if you want them for display any hole you can put in one (for the most part) can be repaired.
Load some up, shoot some dogs, and report back with your results.

Pelts are worth more and more, LOL. What planet are you living on? Per about always - you have no first-hand experience. Stick to killin' paper.

I've hunted coyotes with every 22 caliber and for the past ten years have used only a 204. The 204 has out performed everything for preventing fur damage. I use 40 gr. Vmax and shot placement is still key for a quick kill and no damage. Almost all my shots are less than 150 yds and it's a pleasure not to have an exit hole to sew up.
I thought growing old would take longer.
