A friend of mine has offered me an unfired Ruger #1(black pad), target model with heavy barrel, chambered in 22-250. My only hang up is that it's a 1-14 twist.
Virginia might allow 223 cal for deer next year, and I'd love to have the option to use this rifle if they do it. Will the 1-14 work with the lighter TSX,TTSX, or the 60 grain partition? Or, should I just pass on this for a fast twist?
It's a real beauty, and if I knew that something would work, I'll buy it! Any help appreciated.

I had a 14 twist 22-250 for many years. Took lots of critters with it using 70 grain Speer round nose loaded to about 3300 with 3031. Killed well and very accurate.

If you decide against it let me know. I would love to have one. I really don't think you can go wrong

Are you sure it's 1-14? I thought 1-12 was Ruger's standard back in the day.

My Ruger #1-in 22/250 ( 1.14 twist) shoots the Barnes 53 gr TSX into 1/2. I didn't think the rifle would shoot the Barnes bullet very accurately ...yet it did.

buy the rifle and try some bullets of different grains and lengths , if it shoots a 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards that`s good enough for a deer your not shooting at a mouse . remember when people and myself on this site talk about rifle twist , bullet weights and group sizes we are trying to shoot tiny little groups or 1 hole groups. > buy this great rifle and never look back ,Pete53

I'm picking it up this week! I had the same rifle in 223 years back. I foolishly sold it. I won't be making the same mistake with this one! I'll post some pictures later this week.
Thank you for the all the info!

The Speer 70 Grainer was available in the 1980's (if not earlier), before heavier 22 Caliber bullets (and faster twists) became a thing. I'd call it semi-pointed vs round nose. Midway has them on sale right now. Jerry

The 60 gr Nosler Partition is on the shorter side of 60 grain bullets. They shoot decent in my 1:14 Remington 700. The trick is to push them as fast as you can. I use a max charge of Varget but there are for 3500 fps, but there are other powders that push faster. Speed is your friend with boarder line bullet weight to twist rate ratio.

I have a custom built 98 action in 22-250 with a 24" bbl in 1-14" twist. I killed 40 deer with it and retired it from deer hunting. I never had to chase one down or even track it. Dead on the spot. The bullet I have always used is a 55 gr soft point. Always shot 3/4" at 100 yards. Never felt the need to go heavier. Wallacem in Ga
