All about being “green”?

Or maybe they don’t care for dependence on Putin’s gas.....

And not operational until 2035. Much can happen by then.

https://www.independent.co.uk/clima...to-14-new-nuclear-reactors-b2012331.html

President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will build up to 14 new reactors as part of a “renaissance” for the French nuclear industry.

The new reactors are to be built as part of the country’s strategy to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming.

The French leader said the new plants would be built and operated by state-controlled energy provider EDF, and that tens of billions of euros in public financing would be mobilised to pay for the projects, safeguarding EDF’s finances.

Mr Macron provided a roadmap for the building of third-generation EPR (European Pressurised water Reactor) facilities during a visit to the eastern town of Belfort today.

Promising to accelerate the development of solar and offshore wind power in France, Mr Macron also announced that he wanted to extend the lifespan of older nuclear plants to 50 years or more, from 40 years currently, provided it was safe to do so.

The move comes amid concerns about spikes in energy prices, as well as France’s dependence on global gas and oil producers.

Nuclear energy currently provides about 70 per cent of French electricity, a higher proportion than in any other country.

Mr Macron’s decision to extend the lifespan of existing plants marked a U-turn on an earlier pledge to close more than a dozen of EDF’s 56 reactors by 2035. Nuclear safety still divides Europe following Japan’s [bleep] disaster.

If we're going to have electric cars, we're going to need them and they'd better get them under construction soon. If they keep on shutting down fossil fuel power plants, we're going to end up in a serious energy pinch.

I thought when a country decided to depend on themselves and protect their sovereignty that was labeled Fascist, Racist, and Xenophobic.

Anyhow, good for France. They have a loooong track record with nuclear energy production and a good safety record.

Westinghouse designed a production reactor years ago. That way, every plant isn't a one-off custom.

Westinghouse and Georgia Power are busy completing two Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear units. The first nuclear units built in the last 30 years.

Of course the green energy freaks are freaking out about nuclear and did everything they could to stop the construction.

Am I mistaken?

Wasn't France big in nuclear at one time. A huge percentage of
their power, and a global leader.

Then after Chernobyl or [bleep], they tore the plants down?

Lot of reasons for me to promote coal, but nuclear is the
way to go for clean, dependable energy.

That 70% nuclear number is total BS. If the wind blows and the sun shines and all the portable gensets are running then maybe but most times nuclear provides closer to 95% of Frances energy.

Pretty sure I went over the foundation in the US on this topic here...

I think you are right on all counts Dillon. The Japs built their plant on one of the most active geologic fault lines in the Pacific...and that is the fault of nuke technology...no, that is bad judgement. Chernobyl was built with usual Russian methods, shoddy materials, shoddy workmanship, corruption, insufficient safeguards, poor maintenance, ignored operators warnings...doesn't make nuke power bad.
Now thorium reactors are in use, much safer and cleaner than uranium.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

That also now have the ability to tie up the waste in glass. It can be broken, submerged, ground, about anything you can do to it, and it's still in the glass, not the environment.
