This.

I've never had much of an emotional attachment to rifles. People matter.

Family and friends.

I stopped hunting for a long time while shooting High Power rifle but it was at least as much fun as hunting and got to meet and shoot with a lot of great folks.

Memories

I'd be a liar and plain stupid to think I hunt for the meat.

Rifles and gear become part of the memories.

My family and friends know and comment on the guns we've been most successful with and that's what turns them into heirlooms or keepsakes and more than just a firearm, knife, or holster.

The notion of grabbing a rifle to "make a memory" while butt fugking the mountainside all by yourself is for LOSERS.

Flave is a WINNER!

I'm going out scouting tomorrow morning (if the wind quits blowing!) and I will try to get a picture as good as this one:

For thirty years, hunting was no more than a way to put meat in the freezer. Deer/elk hunting was just another job to get done in the fall, akin to gathering firewood.

That I got to use the rifle and loads which I had tuned to what I considered perfection was a plus. A craftsman likes to use good tools. I remember quite a few of the shots I made, but few other details of the hunts.

If I had thought about memories, I might have purchased a camera during during that time.

Then the kids were grown, and budget was less tight. The last few hunts became more about memories. I even took a camera along. That I put an elk in the freezer became the plus.

Before marriage, chasing pheasant on a daily basis (during season) or fishing was recreation/relaxation. Soon after I married, the family farm with 500 acres of supreme pheasant habitat went away. And coincidentally, so did most of the pheasant.

Thanks again Dan for your sacrifices.

As can I read between the lines of your post.

It clearly states "Rooster7 is an idiot." You have no clue of that which you speak.

My wife was always standing beside me pitching wood into the truck as I sawed it. And she was often on the mountain with me when game was killed. There were two tags to fill.

I apologize. I was trying an attempt at humor and sarcasm. Obviously it backfired.

I have killed a lot of deer, we were poor and needed the meat early in the 50 years of marriage. If you are good at it, you learn to kill without emotion, it is an act of harvest, like pulling roasting ears or slaughtering hogs.

I always dreamed of the mountains and fair chase on an elk, done that now, that was a memory. I built the rifle, nothing fancy, wanted it to do the job, Pac Nor barrel on a Savage donor, shot it a lot after getting it set up, the opportunity came and the equipment was up to the task. That hunt was a bucket list item.

In reality... I hunt no different than I pick a ripe tomatoes off of the vine... or oysters out of a float... or crabs out of a pot.

I enjoy it all... even the sucky parts.

Looked in the barn the other day and three short dressed 8 pointer skulls just hanging there... planned to Dermestid beetle and Euro mount... and then forgot all about it.

Men hunt because men hunt...

Except for the ones that don't...

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.
