Learn something new every day. I didnt know Rem 788s came in long and short actions...what did they chamber in the long actions?
Sarco referred the two different stocks as long and short which, I believe, denotes the different spacing distance between the action screws. Accordning to Sarco, the long action is 7 1/16" C2C and the short action is 6 3/4" C2C.
The only 788 that I have is a 308 in a McM Classic style stock and since I don't remember where I last left it, I can't verify what the action screw spacing is on that rifle is.
