There is now a Black Pepper and Smoky version of A-1. It's thicker, less sweet, and with a more intense flavor. Wife bought it by accident, but it may now be our favorite. We also like 57 for things like pork chops. Both good.
To those who sneer at sauce and say steak is best as-is, I ask if that's so why do you add salt and pepper?

Pepper is a flavoring....salt is a flavor enhancer.

I love A-1. When I was 4 or 5 my mom walked into the kitchen to find me in the fridge drinking it right out of the bottle. That being said, I don’t use it much, especially on my steak. I do love it on my baked potato though.

Used it on every steak my Dad ever cooked.
Had no idea how steaks actually tasted until I was in my mid 20's.
Love you Dad. Pretty much the same with my Dad until I was a teenager and started learning to BBQ on an oak pit myself. A1 has no place near a steak!

Haven't used A-1 since college in the 80's and was introduced to Central Coast liveoak BBQ tri-tip.
That's to say unless eating at a restaurant diners or Grandparents, both sides, who never could grasp carryover cooking and resting or spending a little more for better fattier cuts.
By the 90's I had taken over all meat cooking duties at all family functions.

Only if I was guest and someone overcooked my steak.
If I paid for the meat, and grilled it past a very red med/rare, I'd give it to the dogs and start over.

A bit of A1 is great on a hamburger steak and also compliments pot roast and chicken-fried steak, but it has no place on an actual steak.
Now with even more aplomb

I've never been a fan of it myself. Outside of Alabama white sauce - I don't think I've really got any desire to sauce much of anything. Ribs get a bbq sauce - occasionally.

Must be nice… Not really. When Grandma died, Dad got the propane bbq. Mom figured he could help out with dinner and he started doing the steaks. We also got a nice set of serrated steak knives that were very helpful and much needed.

Heinz 57 is excellent on sharp cheddar. It's good on eggs too. Right beside a chitty truckstop breakfast steak. Wife likes A1. I prefer this. It helps the occasional dried out steak. (Unlike some, we arent perfect) It is good with just a tad mixed into burger, or mixed with mayo on a burger.

I had a hamburger steak last night and put some A1 on it and just as an afterthought, put some horseradish on as well. The A1 and horseradish went together very well on the hamburger steak. I will most definitely do that again.
