Have a few decades in the rear view mirror these days and was reflecting on days gone by in the shooting sports. One of the thoughts came about due to dialog on a different thread, that being that I've not shot a factory round of CF ammo in quite some time except for a .380 pistol and some trash .30 M1 ammo about 15 years ago. I began loading in the very early 70's for handguns, moved up to rifles in the mid '80's and shotguns around 2000. I haven't shot any critters with a jacketed bullet in about 20 years. My questions: What have you loaded and shot for over the years? My track record: .22 GTC, .22 Hornet/K-Hornet, .243 Win, .25-20 Win, .25-20 SS, .250 Savage, .257 Roberts, 7x57, .30 Carbine, .30-30, .30 Sneezer, .300 Weatherby, .38 Spcl, .357 Mag, 9mm, .358 Win, .38-55 Win, .40x.38-55 Win, .405 Win, .416 Rigby, .44 mag, .45-70, 20/16/12 Ga shot shells. So, just how loony are you? and hundreds of thousands of 12 gauge trap loads..

Tikka, that’s quite generous and kind, but in recent times my small bore flock has found greener pastures. Other than RF shooters the most petite plinker I have is the .250 Savage. It might over penetrate?

Stopped in a local M&P store in Hearne, TX. Probably about 1973. Bought a used Ruger Super Blackhawk in .41 Rem Mag. Got home (Palestine, TX) and shot up what ammo came with the gun. Next morning, I'm in town looking for more ammo. A 50 round box of Remington ammo was $18! WHAT!? After talking to the store owner, I ordered a Lee Loader, bullets, primers and powder. That was my initiation! I don't load for a catalog of calibers, but I load for several. I have 2 MEC 600 Jr loaders. A 12 gauge and a 20 gauge. Sadly, I only shoot 16 gauge shotguns! LOL!

I started loading around 13-14 years old. Dad got me an RCBS kit from the old NRA coupon books they’d send out. I’ve been addicted as hell since.

A lot! All rifle!
I used to load a little bit of shotgun and a ton of 38 and 45, but my rifle looneyism finally pushed all that aside. I just don't shoot either of them enuf to load them. A friend with around a dozen Dillons of various complexities gives me what little handgun ammo I want except for factory stuff that I use for carry purposes. I bought a case of military grade 00 buck for use if I need to repel boarders. If I ever shoot doves again, I'll buy a few boxes.
Rifle ammo of many shades have been churned out of my presses over the last 43 years. What little factory stuff purchased has been really cheap deals for the purpose of getting brass. Some European cartridges are as cheap to buy loaded as to buy new brass. PPU is a good example. When I got my 9.3X62, their ammo was super reasonable and the brass excellent. When I picked up my 1903 Mannlicher-Schoenauer, I ran across a guy at a gun show that gave me an unbelievable price on 14 boxes of old (70s I think, came in the old wood grain boxes) Norma 6.5X54. There was so much of it that I ended up killing a deer with it before I emptied all the brass. That is the first deer killed with a factory load in decades, maybe even since 79 when I started reloading.
I have also started casting and powder coating. So far, I've only taken deer with cast in 45-70, 38-55, and 9X57. Hope to add 30 WCF to that list this year using my Winchester 54, but with my eyes, hitting a deer using the Lyman peep will be a challenge.
EDIT: Just did a quick count and, it seems that I have loaded almost 30 CF rifle rounds.

12 & 20ga.
Started pulling the handle in '73 with a Pacific 105 12ga. loader & in 74 with an RCBS Jr. A high percentage of my guns have never used a factory load. Not sure if I've ever killed big game with a factory load & the only varmints killed with factory stuff will have been the ones shot with a rimfire. OTOH, I'll grab a killer deal if I get the chance. A bud & I bought 2 pallets of 12 ga. target loads & about halfway through the second pallet we quit shooting Sporting Clays for some reason & what shells were left have carried me through several Dove seasons.
I cast some in the 70's but didn't get serious about it till Obamas first year & damn glad I started back. Just another source of freedom & self reliance.

Did shotguns too, but I found it cheaper to buy for trap shooting compared to loading 12 gauge on a Lee Load-All. I got a 16 gauge MEC, just because I have a few 16s that I love to shoot. The Old Man had an 870 in 16. It was the only shotgun I saw him use in over 4 decades of hunting bunnies and squirrels. He bought it used in 1946, following his WW2 service. It was pretty rough when it became mine, but I got it reblued and the stock and action redone. I can imagine what he’d say about spending the money, but it’s a beauty, and I still use it occasionally just for his sake. Also have Remington M48 and a Savage SxS in 16, so the MEC does get some use. Wads are hard to find though. Holy smokes, the last time I saw 16s in factory loads, they were $15 a box! 7mm
