Once Savage started selling the 300 Savage, I would think that the demand for their 30-30s ad 303s nose-dived.

Even the 250-3000 started becoming very popular when introduced, and that gun was an expensive model in 1915.

By late 30's the 99H was the only one being sold in numbers in 30-30 or 303, and that's because it was the cheapest model and was only available in 30-30 and 303 until 1934. I don't think many large retailers even sold the 99H in 250 for a while after that.

I'm guessing a favored retailer, customer or employee send in a request for it. They could do it easily enough, they just didn't catalog it for general sales. Cool gun!

Rory, you forgot the 99B, Style 2.

I have an EG (so stamped on the front of the frame), 24" barrel in .303. Serial # 3996XX (checkered). The barrel is a takedown barrel. Sqweeler has (or had) an identical rifle, serial # 3998XX.

UpThePole, if you remove the forearm and look at the bottom of the barrel and it is stamped "OFF" with a directional arrow, it is a left over 99B barrel. Otherwise it is a 99A barrel or special order as Rory said.

I'm in the using up left over barrels camp. During and immediately after WWII Savage probably used whatever they had to assemble salable rifles - catalog be damned.

I found a 303 EG at Cabelas with a Stith on it serial number 1946. 24" Utica barrel if I remember correctly

300 Jimmy had that gun. Maybe he still does...

Jaack, you're right - the 99B from 1927 to 1934 did have a 24" barrel. I even thought of asking him to check for the OFF and arrow, and then figured it was really unlikely given they stopped making them in 1934. Should have mentioned it had a 24" barrel tho.

Norm99 just picked a late 99 with 26" barrel also, shotgun buttplate. Oddball guns are popping up everywhere! grin

Personally I really want to run in to a 1946 99RS Version 1 in 303 and 24" barrel. Oooooh... yeah.

Was the 40/45 ever chambered for a rimmed cartridge ?

If you are asking about a 40 or 45, the 45 was made in the 45 Auto Rim. Made to be used in revolvers that need moon/half moon clips that used 45 ACP ammo. Like the Colt 1917 officers revolvers, or the Smith 25 target revolver.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

That was a quick and confusing change in the conversation. Did I miss something?
