Kansas's blackpowder season opened yesterday. As usual, it was hot with forecasted temps in the low to mid 90's all week. While pre-season scouting we've seen little deer activity, few bucks, and no real decent bucks. I spent the morning glassing does, and mid-day sweating. Around 4 o' clock in the afternoon my oldest son called to check in but mostly he just complained about the heat. He'd seen a few bucks and does but nothing exciting. He was glassing a new section of WIHA (Walk-In-Hunting Area) that was rolling CRP with 3 overgrown dried creek beds and suggested I drive over. I took the northeast side, while he drove around and came in from the southwest. Working along the northern most creek bed, glassing all the way, within 30 minutes I saw antler tips in the field. A chamber filled with 35 grains of Triple 7 FFFg and a .456 Kaido 220 grain conical went clean through with the ol' 'cap 'n ball' pistol @50 yards. A 70 yard death run and, of course, he died down in one of the dry creek beds (which was about 10' deep). Good thing one of my boys was there to help me get him out. Not the biggest, but it was hot and he was standing there. Now on to bowhunting a Missouri buck that made a fool of me last year. Man, that's deeper and steeper than it looks.

That's pretty cool - well done! I'll bet you didn't have to contend with hunting pressure. So are the baldies gonna catch hell during rifle season now?

The only other nimrods I saw out there hunting were the 2 I raised. Nah, I'll hit the 'yotes, give them some hell, and do some glassing and pushin' for the Boys. Definitely spend some time back east bowhunting Missouri.

Good stuff!! I think I'd like to give that early ML hunt a go. At least once.

Awesome hunt there. Love to hunt the creek bottom edges. My bud was on a mission to make meat with a 45 cal flintlock he made. Daybreak was around 60 degrees in Lyon county, forecast for 85 by 10 am. We were sitting in a blind on a creek bottom with a small bean field to watch. Had deer in and out of field or brush, at times we had 5 different does within 8 to 25 yards of blind. Saw a 6 point about 250 yards out, only buck we saw. Bud finally shot one of the does and the hunter & flintlock worked perfectly. I think his load was 70 gr of FFF with a patched ball. Go get the deer and head to processor. The rest of ML season looks to be hot and dry, with plenty of bugs.

Good job. I've only hunted that early season muzzleloader once, a few years ago. It was kind of nice to get the monkey off the back and not have the pressure of filling a tag the rest of the year.

A hand gun no less. I'll give you extra style points. Congrats. I tell ya,' roundoak, the handgun hunting bug has hit me hard. I've spent hours at the range going 2, 3, sometimes 4 times a week, shooting out to 100 yards - and haven't shot a rifle all year. The 2 biggest bucks I've seen both stepped out while I had a handgun. Easy rifle shots, but a poke for a handgun. I've practiced enough that those bucks won't get a pass anymore.

Nice buck there and bet he'll be fine eating. I like eating bucks up through late Oct on the plains a lot. I'll be in a stand shortly.
