When Russia chooses to go bare knuckle, Ukraine hasn't got a chance,..and Russia doesn't want the entirety of Ukraine. It just wants to liberate the regions in Ukraine that consists of ethnic Russians,...the same regions that have been under persecution by Ukraine since the CIA orchestrated a color revolution in Ukraine in 2014.
Of corse, the West is not going to allow that because the sole reason for the color revolution in Ukraine in 2014 was to set up a proxy war between the West and Russia.
Ukraine is just a pawn in the whole affair.
So,..the referendum is being held. The Ethnic Russians who make up the majority of the regions that are holding the referendums will overwhelmingly vote to return to Russia. It's the only way for them to get out from under the thumb of Ukranian persecution.
The West (America) will not recognize the results of the referendum and will escalate the war against Russia as a result. Remember,...this is an American orchestrated proxy war between the West and Russia.
Russia knows this also. Hence. the mobilization of 300,000 troops in Russia.
America is sending missiles into Ukraine which are capable of striking the Russian mainland in anticipation of the escalation which will occur after the Donbass region votes to leave Ukraine.
The Cuban missile crisis is a pimple on the ass compared to the potential for nuclear war that this situation has created.
Russia, China, and the global south know this. The American people are being kept in the dark about it as they're kept in the dark about everything else.
