I'm the sharpener. It's not hard to sharpen a knife on just about any kind of stone or file, if you know how. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the "razors" edge guy who obsesses about it. I'm the guy who everybody in camp comes to to sharpen their knife.
The point is that it's like everything else in life. Do it a lot and you get better at it

Arkansas oil stones. Leather strop. Smooth butchers steel for maintenance. Japanese Water Stones, and water. Far superior to the Arkansas variety. Man, I just load mine up and take them to the kid at the knife store, $3 or $4 a knife depending on size, walk out owing $20 or so and I get to play with all the new bad ass blades they get in. They are sharp enough that I won't let the kids near them and have gotten a knife block just for them.
