My Father in law was a terrific hunter, he shot all kinds of game with his M94 30-30, lots of Elk, many Deer and Bears.
We were hunting (40 years ago) and there was a buck, I use his rifle just to say I shot a Deer with it...I go to shoot, I miss. A short time later I get another chance at another buck, I miss LOL...the old man grabs the rifle and says...gimme that fugging thing, and shoots the buck dead LOL.
I still snicker when I think of it, we came home with 3 bucks that day, I missed 2 LOL.

Will a 30/30 kill a deer? Of course! TracksWapiti uses his 30/30 for polar bears. But only in thick woods at bow ranges.

Yes of course it will kill deer. Anything that can punch a hole in both lungs will kill a deer including a .22. That said I have never been really impressed by the performance on deer with a 30-30. it makes a hole and with proper shot placement they die. Never had a deer drop on the spot with a 30-30. And most ran further and bled less after being shot through the vitals than any other deer cartridge I have ever used.

Truth is, 30 -30 and 270 are probably in the top 3 for Polar Bear kills.

I was worrying on my 336 A, but it's been Ackley Improved so I believe it'll be OK with the revolution projectiles I have. Got 200 of them years ago and 2 lbs of AA2230. Gonna get around to puttin' them together one day.....

Damn I'm too busy.

OK. Good stuff. Just as long as you don't use a 270. wink

That's odd. I've found it works about the same as anything. Shot high shoulder/spine/head they drop right there. Shot through the lungs they generally run 20-60 yards, whether .30-30, .35 Rem., .223, 243, 6.5 Creed, 7x57, .308 or 30-06.

It's the same thing an animal gets at 100 yards from a 30-30.

Well, there is that.

I would have hated to have been their quartermaster. 30-30, 30-40, 7x57, and who knows what other cartridges they used.

No doubt. But there is a soft spot in my heart for 1894’s too

Here’s a very recent acquisition and a take down model too!!!

Good evening to you sir, I trust the week behaved for you and you're well.

Your statement triggered a couple memories for me so hopefully it's okay if I share them.

My late father in law said he shot a hole in the farm house roof with a .303 Savage which his father had brought with him from Minnesota when he'd moved up to Manitoba. Seymour related to me he saw it behind the entrance door, racked the lever, pulled the trigger and then it was really loud after that. Both the boom and his mother giving his father what for because he'd left it loaded where the boys could get at it maybe?

In a Gun Digest back in the day, Sam Fadala had an article on the .30-30 and if memory serves opined that likely the availability of 190gr bullets made some folks believe - possibly with reason - that the .303 Savage was better for say moose sized animals. He found some factory .303 Savage 190's for the article, pulled the bullets and loaded them in the .30-30 he had.

For the life of me I can't recall any firm conclusions, but perhaps there were some? Not sure, sorry.

Thanks for twigging the memories, all the best and good hunting.

Dwayne

PS Afterthought.

We've entirely consumed 2 bucks, one local mulie and a Columbia Blacktail that were shot with a .30-30. I'd think that indicated they were dead then, no?

Jim;
Good evening to you my cyber friend, I trust you and your fine family are well.

Hey now though, you say that like it's a bad thing?!? laugh

Come to think of it though Jim, we do have an overabundance of Gordons don't we...... blush

Our eldest loves ketchup chips so that's what I buy for hunting season snacks as she's my usual partner.

I must confess I'm an "all dressed" chips fan more so, but anything for the kids, right?

All the best to you all and good hunting Jim.

Dwayne

Thanks for finding the humor Dwayne.

I like all dressed chips very much.

I do like potato chips dipped in ketchup. Don't like bagged ketchup chips.
