If you restocked an early 99E ver2, style 2 with the extra's (steel butt plate, brass cartridge counter), with 99EG wood... would it then be a late EG-ish??

Or you could put 99R Version 2 wood on it and make it 99R-ish.

I think the post-mil factory 99E is the most unattractive and clubby handling 99 made. I had a 1968 .308W E. After replacing the factory wood with 1957 F walnut (with the desired cheek pads) and the fore arm with a splinter-ish 1940s EG fore arm, the improvements in aesthetics as well as the ergos are noticeable. The birch factory furniture is weighty compare to the lighter walnut replacements. The F butt stock has less drop and a narrower wrist which contribute to the improved ergos.
I wrote above that I had a 1968 .308W E because it has since been JESercised to a 3-groove, 14T .358 Win. As noted in a previous post on this thread, the post-mil E has the 20" barrel, perfect for quick handling. But when the short barrel is lighten with a larger bore, it is even more 'perfect'.

I think we should praise the 99E as an inexpensive basis for making some cool custom 99's.

I think we should praise the 99E as an inexpensive basis for making some cool custom 99's. A factory 20" lightweight barrel .358W 1950s 99F would be my 'Savage 99 'Grail' gun. My 99E with it's upgraded walnut furniture and 'lighten' barrel weights within 2 oz of my factory original .308W 1957 99F. However, the 99E has a steel stock bolt. If the 99E had an aluminum stock bolt like the 99F, I suspect the 99E would weight the same if not lighter. Still, best feel (in my hands), goes to the current version of the 99E.

Back in 2004 I bought a 99E in 300 SAV from Tal35 for $245 as a donor action for something. That something turned out to be a 22-250 with a GPC barrel and end of production 99C wood. Not a bad rifle for shooting coyotes, definitely gets looks from other coyote hunters. I have since thought about removing the 22-250 barrel and installing a 22" 250-3000 99A barrel on it, but that is a project that has yet to advance beyond the thinking about it stage.
