Have a look at savagesinglehots.com if you don't know it. There's chance your gun came from the factory as a combination set with both barrels! Which Savage plant produced it, Utica or Chicopee Falls?

Neat little guns!

From what I see says Utica on the barrel.

The Savage 219 can make for a quite capable, lightweight, stalking rifle:

This pre-war .30-30 was weatherproofed with Black Nitride treatment to its exposed steel parts.

Thank you, sir.
Its good looks are only exceeded by its excellent handling qualities. While I’d prefer a bit lighter trigger pull, no one’s figured out a way to safely get that with the 219’s particular striker layout. Perhaps the later internal hammer versions might allow for that.

Yes, basically your rifle is something I'd like to eventually make mine into.
One of my Dream guns is a custom stalking rifle in 7x57, right now I can have a more afforable version. :-)

The barrel mounted sling swivel, where did you find it from?

It’s an Uncle Mikes two piece:

I would have preferred the one piece full band. But, it wasn’t offered in the correct diameter to position it where I wanted along the barrel. I had the two piece Black Nitride treated along with the rest of the steel parts.

Carefully measure your barrel where you want the band. Then order the closest size band. The two piece does allow for a bit of diameter adjustment.

Be warned: There is no more severe test of patience than disassembling and reassembling a Savage 219. The guts come out far easier than they go back in. Once you learn just how to do it, it gets easier. However, for the first time, you’ll want to have the suicide hot line on speed dial.

Congratulations on your new acquisition. I’ve got one as well but haven’t done anything with it yet. Keep us posted.

The black nitride really sets this off. Great idea. You certainly have some awesome single shots.

It’s said that Black Nitride treatment makes the steel surface harder than chrome. I’m not able to confirm that, but it sure is hard. Because it is a surface treatment rather than a coating, it doesn’t alter dimensions.

Congrats! The 219s were very humble, low cost guns, but they had good barrels, and usually shoot very well.

Haven’t done a price check in quite some time. But, last time I did check, a “bunch” of gun parts was Black Nitride treated for $200, and H&M wasn’t particularly fussy about how many guns contributed parts to the bunch, within reason. Check out H&M Metal Processing of Akron OH online for details.

I wish I had one in 25-20. I could sell it and buy a moderately priced German kiplauff. laugh

Kidding aside, Owen started hunting at 7 with an experienced 220 20ga, just like I did at the same age. We now have 20, 16, and 12 ga barrels each, three receivers, two 30-30 barrels, and I have a Hornet barrel. They handle and shoot well, and are a lot of fun.

One 30-30 has a peep sight, one has open sights, and the Hornet is scoped.
