Lots of farmers in my area had falling down tobacco barns. County was still taxing them years after they stopped using them.

I understand there was a local "helper" that for a small fee would light a candle for the old barn. Didn't know date or time but it be done. Evidence of vagrants left behind for the fire dept. Screw the tax man.

Long time ago my grandfather had property with an old rental mobile home on it. Wasn't really worth much but the property tax assessor hit him on it. Raised taxes because it had a "home". He got pissed. Towed off/burnt down the home. Taxed went up again. Assessor said "You got rid of the eyesore, now its worth even more".

I've never ever ever seen him angry in my life - except when talking about that. Eventually he simply replaced the home with a better one and did okay but he was HOT.

A live stream of the inspectors visit would be fun...

They practice chipping golf shots on his front lawn.
Kid likes dogs also, he came over one day last summer asking about all the bricks on my front lawn.
Gave him a tour about the pet cemetery told him all about the cats and dogs and the arrowheads on the bricks.

While it may very well be one of your neighbors that turned you in. Remember also that it's not just GPS imagery that cities are relying on to spot illegal construction, but have also turned to the use of commercial drones which gives better resolution and nearly instant updates. Could be that someone just spotted what you were doing from above.
