Well not a 99 but way back 10 years or so I picked up a cheap Remington 600, a member from the fire posted over a Remington 300 Sav barrel new take off which I had fitted. For some reason I sold it no idea why, hands up anyone else who's done that lol. Anyway its found its way back to me with the smith at the moment extractor was buggered bolt release pin broken & spring missing but bore was still as new.

So back to reloading, I load Hornady 150 grn SST's for a mate who has my old 99F he has shot dozens of sambar deer with it but i'm thinking that bullet is a little long compared to the short case neck been thinking of going back to the past and looking a flat base bullet.

What are you fellas using? if I could find some old rem corelokts i'd grab them a lot of reports down here than the new line of corelokt bullets are not proving to be as good as old ones

I load the 130 Barnes for the 300 I have. They hammer pigs, haven’t shot a deer with one.

Same bullet I use in mine, driven to 2650-2750fps over a charge of H4198, N130, or IMR3031.

The Speer 125 TNT makes a good plinker, they're cheap and generally pretty easy to work up accurate loads with.

We use Sierra 150gr spitzers in our 300’s. Deer hate them! 😂

The Sierra 125 spitzers shoot pretty well from mine, but I've only killed paper and steel with them out of the 300. I do know the Sierra 110 FB Varminters knock the snot of of coyotes at both 303 and 300 velocities at short range. That is a BIG hollow point at the end of those.

The Hornady 150 Interlocks do well in my 99s chambered for 300 Sav.

150 Sierras and 180 Interlocks

Nosler Partititons, whichever weight from 150gr to 180gr that your rifle likes. I prefer the 150gr/165gr, but they all kill things dead.

Using IMR4895.

Barnes TTSX 110's or 130's

That amounts to nothing whatsoever. My 700 Classic in 300 Savage loves 168 grain AMaxes and VLD Bergers.

I use 150 grain Sierras. They are loaded to about 2550 fps and do all I could ask a bullet to do on a whitetail. Haven't had the opportunity to tackle anything bigger.

Well it shows a varied lot of bullets and weights that you blokes like, seems to be anything that shoots will be fine.

Thanks for the excuse to spend some dollars and hit the range, i'll go with the Hornady SST to start with

TSX or TTSX 130s?

TTSX’s, have used the 62’s out of an AR at that same speed, punched through several 150-200 lb pigs at 225 by this feeder. A 130 should have a lot of penetration. I think MR MuleDeer uses them in 300 Savages.

It’s 225 from green feeder to stand in background. Many a damn pig has been killed there. Trap a few, have fun shooting them during the off season, mostly with the 223’s

I use 150 gr spitzer bullets by Speer, Hornady, Sierra, Remington, Winchester, et al. It doesn't seem to matter much which bullet is used, all have done well for my use. These get shot through a couple of Savage 99s, a Remington 700, a Remington 722, Remington 760, and a handful of Remington 81s.

Forgot to add powder: just about anything that gives me a velocity in the mid 2500 fps range works. I mostly use 4064 but Varget, 4895, and Winchester 748 have been used in the past.

Hornady makes a 150 gr SST (#30303) specifically for the 300 Savage that accommodates the short neck.

You know one of the awful things about getting old is the failing memory, of course you are correct and that's what I loaded in my mates F and loaded for myself. I think a member here sent a couple of boxes over to me as they were not available here so now back to chasing the gun shops up

Regarding these bullets ive shot several big sambar deer with and my mate probably 20 or 30 sambar so bullet is proven for sure on these big animals

1. It's not about the short neck. Hornady shortened the ogive compared to the regular version to accommodate the 2.6" overall length spec for cartridges going into a Savage 99.

2. The OP is loading for a Remington 600, which I believe will hold 2.8" cartridges in its magazine.
