Is there a name for that brief moment of uncertainty that immediately follows after you accidentally hurt yourself and grab the afflicted area to apply pressure but haven't yet taken a peak to see just how badly injured you really are? If not there should be.

Medical term is shock I believe. No, shock is a sudden drop in blood pressure, usually followed by fainting or unconsciousness. As someone else said, it's reflexive.

For me it's just a gut instinct to stop the bleeding. Example: below picture happened Nov 16, 2021. The moment I felt the tin slide through my palm I knew it was bad. I immediately made a tight fist and held it with the other hand as tight as possible for the 30min ride to the ER. The blood you see on my palm is all it bled due to direct pressure.....
