Is there a name for that brief moment of uncertainty that immediately follows after you accidentally hurt yourself and grab the afflicted area to apply pressure but haven't yet taken a peak to see just how badly injured you really are? If not there should be.

Don't be the darkness.
America will perish while those who should be standing guard are satisfying their lusts.

Similar to locking your keys in your car, just more painful, as the door swings shut, its called an iggy second.
I'm not cheap, I'm frugal.

What were you doing when you hurt yourself?
Before you answer, please know that I am going to tell you you were stupid for doing that because it is risky behavior and you would have been better off sitting on the couch watching television.

In my profession we refer to that phenomena as 'irretractable' pain.

Don’t know, if not, then pause’able deniability might fit the bill.

Medical term is shock I believe. No, shock is a sudden drop in blood pressure, usually followed by fainting or unconsciousness. As someone else said, it's reflexive.

I call that a “O Shiitt” moment As I read along, this ^^^^^ is what came to mind!
"...A man's rights rest in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box and the cartridge box..." Frederick Douglass, 1867

For me it's just a gut instinct to stop the bleeding. Example: below picture happened Nov 16, 2021. The moment I felt the tin slide through my palm I knew it was bad. I immediately made a tight fist and held it with the other hand as tight as possible for the 30min ride to the ER. The blood you see on my palm is all it bled due to direct pressure..... Well until the doc went to prep it for stitches, scrubbing and sterilizing.
