I have a .30 Gibbs and love it. However, definitely a cartridge where the juice isn’t worth the squeeze for 99% of shooters.

I'd do an ammo search of the cartridges you are considering and see what's mostly available, I like the idea of 280 AI but ammo can be hard to find. You could always open the bolt face and do a 7mm PRC, building one myself now.

If you already have a 30-06 then my vote would be 270win.

M70 and 270win. kinda go together.

Another vote for 30-06 with a 22" barrel. When I restocked my Model 70 and bedded it with a Bansner stock back in the 90s I had the factory barrel cut to 22". It's been the most consistently accurate, hot or cold, clean or dirty, rifle I've ever owned. It's been three shot MOA or better with 125, 150 & 180 gr bullets. I had to change/back off my 150 gr load last year to 46 gr. of powder as age is starting to catch up with me but it's still shoots as well as it ever did.

A model 70 in 30-06 or 270win is the CLASSIC hunting rifle. I'd keep it as a 30-06.

Tough choice to make.
6.5-06, 270, 280, 8-06, 338-06, 35w.
Depending what else you have and what you hunt or the terrain you hunt. It’s hard to say.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

All of those over a 30-06?

To me, the 30-06 is always the easy button.

Going to the gun plumber in a couple days. Duplicating the factory barrel and having the action gone through. Should be good. MNR Custom in VT is reshaping a nice LT factory stock for me.and the whole thing will.be put back together. Easy not-so-custom rifle.

The way life should be.
