Haven't eat at a wide enough group of them to declare any the best but here are some observations I have every time the subject comes up.
1. I'm baffled when anyone lists Taco Bell as a good fast-food place. Not only is it not actual Mexican food but the meat they use (if it really is meat) seems like it's been pureed into a mush then freeze dried into a powder which they reconstitute by adding hot water. Nasty chit. I blame wasted stoners for them still being in business. If you don't eat whatever you get from Taco Bell within 5 minutes, it becomes a soggy mess that looks like it's trying to dissolve. I'd rather kill a rat in the parking lot and roast it over a fire. And I say this as someone that likes real Mexican food.
2. Chick-fil-a is consistently the most overrated fast-food place in America. Not that it's bad. It's just OK at best. The owner of that company is a well-known conservative and widely considered to be anti-gay. For these reasons a lot of conservative people in this country want to support his business. And that is perfectly fine but, in their zeal, to show support it causes them to greatly overrate the quality of the food. Hell, a Popeyes chicken sandwich curb stomps the chit out of one from Chick-fil-a. And it's not even close.
3. Never understand the Wendy's hate like you can see from some in this very thread. I have never had a bad burger from Wendy's. Of the really big nationwide burger chains I'd say their burgers are easily the best I have tried. We don't have one close by where I live but I'd trade any of the fast-food burger joints we do have like McDonalds, Burger King, Sonic, Hardees, or Jacks for a Wendys in a heartbeat.
4. Five Guys. Overrated, expensive for fast food, and their fries are nasty.
5. Never been to an IN and OUT burger but all the praise for them makes me want to check it out. Inn N Out is overrated imo. Don’t get me wrong, I like the double double, but I will take a Carl’s Jr. double western bacon cheese all day over it. In N Out have the nastiest French Fries in the entire fast food world. In my opinion McDonalds has the best. As a whole I find them over rated They do make a good bunless hamburger.(protein burger)

We had some friends grab some taters in Idaho one morning and they made french fries for us for dinner when they got home that evening. Tasted just like the In-N-Out fries I'd always hated! Seriously. The fries from In-N-Out are what potatoes taste like.

Haven’t seen one in years. Used to be a great sandwich! still got a few around phoenix area. lost the one in flagstaff maybe 15 years ago? good sandwich, esp. if something you don't get every day. not sure how often I would eat there if it was in town. More than MacDonalds for sure. There's one about a mile from my house, just like every other fast food place on the planet. It's pretty decent as far as sandwich places go. I eat there about once a year.

Around here Culvers would get my vote. Twenty five to thirty years ago I would have said Wendy's. Man Wendy's has went down hill. I don't eat much fast food. Maybe once a month at most. Dang glad I don't make a habit of that crap.

Runza is our favorite. Seasoned Ground beef / cabbage / onions baked in bread dough. Homemade onion rings. Good fries. If in Nebraska, give it a try.

If I must do fast food- Burger King. Mostly because the burger is better than McDonald's.
We don't have Whattaburger or In-n-Out here - had them when I lived other places. They're ok.

Yep, Wendy's. I finally figured out that if I ordered a burger (Dave's Double my fave) without cheese and without mustard, it's a pretty good burger. Why ? 1)The special order guarantees a hot-off-the-grill burger 2) I like real cheese, but Wendy's garbage American cheese kills the burger taste 3) I like mustard, but that too over-powers the burger taste I'll pull out the pickles and eat them separately Try an unadulterated Wendy's burger and see what you think. Pro Tip To guarantee hot fries, order your fries with no salt. Then salt them yourself as needed.

These days you may as well hit up the local Mexican joint. Cheaper or same price and a lot better . Just as fast too.
