This new progressive press has me thinking I might need some new 38 specials.
I have an old DA Colt.
I am cured of buying new Smith and Wessons....what were some good old ones?
Thinking for target practice and plinking for the family.
What would a good Target model be if we get really serious?
Thanks. A Pre-1982 S&W Model 14 (K-38 Target Masterpiece) would be perfect.

Folks have already mentioned the two best choices in S&W, the Model 14 and 15.
"I have an old DA Colt." - don't know which one you have but the Colt Officer's Model Match and the original Trooper .38 Spl (pre-Mark III) are both decent buys in today's market, with the 4" Trooper generally commanding a little higher price They both have the same lockwork as the original Python but the OMM is "hand assembled" instead of "hand fitted". Very accurate revolvers.
Those haven't really been bit by the collector status bug so on a good day examples of both in good to very good condition can be found on gunbroker in the upper $600 range.
For a pure target gun, either the Colt OMM or Smith Model 14 are your huckleberries. I went and grabbed it. It's an Official Police. Must not have the original stocks on it though.

Jim; Good afternoon to you sir, I hope that you and your fine family are well and you're getting the weather you need for crops and livestock. I'm cognizant you've asked about .38Spl revolvers Jim, but the most accurate revolver I've owned or shot was a 6½" Blackhawk I bought in '81. With it we'd plink rocks the size of grapefruit on the banks of the dugout which were about 100yds away. A friend of the cousin we farmed with expressed doubt and I showed him I could hit a blank sheet of paper - regular copy paper - 5 out of 6 shots at 100yds regularly. Somehow I thought I wanted to get into PPC or some kind of action shooting, so I sold it and bought a Security Six. It's okay Jim and runs flawlessly, but I've never been able to hit with it quite as well as the Blackhawk. Over the years I've shot and handled a couple other Security Sixes and have handled a GP100 too - again they're all not strictly .38Spl, but seem to shoot them fine enough to have fun and learn some good handgun shooting habits. Hope that was useful for you or someone out there this afternoon sir. All the very best to you and your fine crew. Dwayne

This wears a different set of grips now, but it is a pretty bad MF when it gets fed target loads. Bull barrel FTW (at least I think it's a bull barrel, I'm not a S&W guru)

Hard to beat a M15 Smith. Brother, you ain't kidding. I bought mine new in mid-1965. Still shoots like a fine target revolver. I think Ill keep it. L.W.

My buddy inherited a lovely 38 revolver. 6 inch blued, at least 60 years old, DA, action like a fine watch.
I do not remember the model designation, but it has a prancing pony on the side.
Yes, I am a bit jealous. Even though I avoid 35 calibers like the plague.

Ruger GP-100 or 101 or the RIA M206 which will need a trigger job.

Of course, if you have a nice pre-82 S&W Model 19 with a six inch barrel, you have something just as nice a target .38 as is a Model 14 S&W, but one that can also shoot .357 Magnum.

What's good in a short barreled new 38, Rugger LCR perhaps? The S&W PC 327, for CCW defensive revolver nothing else comes remotely close to that. Easy to carry and there is no need for long barrel when using .38 Special or .38 Special +P loads. Wait for a good used one for about $1000, give or take.

Its wonky look is enough to kill an attacker all by itself.
