My kids are playing 6th grade football this year. 70% of the kids on the team have a visible gut to the point it hangs over the belt. The first day of practice there were 2-3 kids that couldn’t run a single 40 yard dash without stopping. You think people are fat now, wait another 15-20 years

There was pizza and soda available in 1980, along with fried chicken and cookies, but the national obesity rates were 13% for males and 17% for females. Like Bill Maher says in that video link, food was delicious in 1969. Calories are not a new thing. Junk food availability and snacking are not new things. Failing to adjust and restrain appears to be the new thing. Why have we lost that desire? Will it take a "Grapes of Wrath" event to correct course? We have always had junk food and processed sugar in my lifetime ,but if you look at statistics for how much sugar and processed foods, we consume compared to 1969, you will see that on average we eat a lot more junk now than then. We also lead more sedentary lives and society in general seems more accepting of anything. Don't forget smoking in the early 80's. If you smoke, you'll won't put on as much weight as if you didnt.

Observation says that the current fat folks parade, while troublesome in itself and explicable in terms of energy in vs. energy burned, is a glaring symptom of more basic malfunctions in this society. When people are willing to neglect self-respect, self-determination, self-support, self-learning, self-management, self-protection, etc. and couple such neglect with demands like "you are not allowed to describe me in ways I cannot stand to hear", the base cause of the many symptoms becomes obvious.
We can deviate and talk about carbs, calories, food quality, sugar water and fast food vs. the old ways of doing food all we wish. We can proclaim that fat is beautiful, sloth is excusable, education is needed, addictions are an illness and unbeatable, "I like what I like", and some just can't "handle it", etc., etc..
There are no excuses for the causes and no slogans will fix our problem. It's personal, and contagious.
