[b][/b]I've put off getting a suppressor for an elk rifle, but I think I'm finally going to pull the trigger. I have lots of elk rifles, but have a consistent top 3, all trued 700s with custom barrels - 7STW, 300H&H, and a wildcat 338 (basically 33PRC).
I'm wondering if I should thread one of my current top 3 or sell a couple I don't use much and buy something already threaded (Seekins PH2, Christensen, Fierce; for example).
Questions:
Will a can throw off the balance much?
My barrels are 24" and 26, would you chop them down to like 22 for the can, or run 24/26 plus the can?
Are suppressors for a 338 more expensive than 30cal and lower? The 33PRC would be great w/ a can - bigger bullets with reduced recoil as well as sound - the others' recoil isn't as bad.
Approx how many months will it take to have it in hand? I'd like to get one for an elk rifle/a 5.56/ and a 22lr, and wonder if I should wait for a sale vs just getting them in the que ASAP.

What would you guys do?

IMO, 22” is too long for a can. I cannot figure out why makers thread a 22” barrel. I like to be 16-18”.

Look up the Silencerco Hybrid 46. It's good for everything 22lr up to 45-70 and it's rated for 300 WinMag and 338 Lapua pressures. Shorten and thread one of your existing rifles. 6-8 month wait time for Tax Stamp approvals.

Picked up my new Thunder Beast after six month wait almost to the day. Purchased through SS.

Get the first one started now and worry about sales when you by your next one. It's easier to wait o paperwork when you already have one in hand. I can't say anything bad about SilencerCO, I have the Omega 300 and Sparrow and like both.

However, I think my next suppressor will be the Rugged AK 360 Ti. It won't handle .45 cal, just 9mm and below. It is pretty light and will save a few ounces on the end of your barrel. You just have to decide if that's worth the extra money.

I wouldn't run a barrel longer than 20" with a suppressor. I can't tell you what to do, but there are more efficient cartridges for sorter barrels. I'd invest in those, or start with your .338 rifle cutting it down.

Oh and I waited 18 months for mine. There was a government shutdown and COVID scamdemic I had to deal with though.

I would go with a lighter suppressor. The Hybrid 46 mentioned is heavy. I wouldn't do that one unless I wanted it on a large caliber rifle.

I like my Thunderbeast Ultra 7, but am considering getting an Ultra 5, too. The Thunderbeast Ultras are light but I think need to be .30 caliber or less. Regarding barrels, I like around 22" on a magnum and less on a milder cartridge.

My latest rifles I will hunt suppressed are a Springfield Waypoint .308 (20") and 6.5 Creedmoor (22") and Seekins Element 7mm PRC (22"). I don't shoot with the suppressor much unless hunting. Stubborn carbon build-up in the suppressor and rifle barrel can be a problem if you're putting a lot of rounds through them. I switch to a muzzle brake or thread protector at the range.

Suppressors do make rifles pretty barrel heavy, but I find that steadier if / when I use sticks to shoot.

I suggest you buy you buy a light 30 caliber suppressor (silencer co EVO is hard to beat for the price accessories and weight) and good rimfire( mask hd is good) tomorrow. Get the clock ticking and decide what to do with the rifle during the wait.

I’ve been very pleased with balance when cutting them to 17”-20”. The only reason I have the 20” is that one is a 300win one was already threaded at 20” and I pussed out and didn’t thread one in the flutes. I won’t be going over 18” from now on with anything else.

I've had a couple of barrels shortened to about 16" and had very good luck with them. BTW my last suppressor was in my hands 28 days from the time of ordering to picking it up from the LSG. Good luck, Dave

Look at SiCo's Omega 36m

You can thread all your faves, for what one pre-threaded rifle will cost ya. The advantage of that is, they won't be living the rest of their lives in the safe because you won't want to shoot them un-suppressed ever again.....

Can you remove a suppressor and reinstall it and not change the poi?

Also I have a #1 taper light weight 20” barrel on my 7mm08. Is there a diameter minimum that can be threaded?

If it were me, I wouldn't suppress any of those options. I have three suppressed rifles, 308 @ 20", 6.5CM @ 24" and 7mm PRC at 22". You can go 300 WM with most suppressers but I really like the 7mm PRC at 22", just the right amount of powder, not excessive, and excellent downrange ballistics. A suppressed rifle will never be short and handy but there are trade-offs, the 308 is about ideal for most of my hunting. My 24" 6.5 CM is a bit long and I may eventually change that barrel. I'd recommend getting something new or put a new barrel on one of the rifles you already own in 30 cal or less, 7mm PRC ideally!

I have three of these and would buy another, street price under $600 and very effective for a hunting rifle.

You'll want more than one. Main thing is get the first one's paperwork started because it'll be awhile.
