Modern recurve or even compound, fine w me. Hell I shoot carbons from my Blackwidow.
Some purist blew me chit at a big trad shoot for that.
Purist..............proly wears goretex boots, drives a 4x4 and even has OnX.
Congrats to the hunter w the bear taken by homemade gear.
But I don't see where the "real hunter" label comes into play.
Hardcore and or traditionalist maybe better titles.

I say Congrats to the young man. He obviously spent a lot of time, effort and energy making his equipment. Not to mention the amount of research it took to be able to make his gear successfully.
