I’m preparing a wood subfloor for new Luxury Vinyl Planking. This floor has a “high ridge” in the middle of the room running from one side to the other probably caused by a floor joist with a high crown. I’m thinking I could rent a flooring drum sander to sand down this high ridge so the floor is then flat.

Is that what you’d do?
Any tips or advice?

Thanks,
Fenton

Throw an oval rug over it when finished.

STX for the final answer...

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

How tall?
Maybe floor leveler or flash patch it out, otherwise it will probably transfer thru.
Or as mentioned sand it out some

Get the better LVP products. The cheap stuff walks and ripples.

If you have access to the joists from below it can be faster to cut the high ones in half, weight them from above till level then sister in another joist. If the crown is 3/16 or less on 1 joist then a sander will work.

I used Akona self leveling concrete/sub floor patch feathered out 6” from the slight rise. Worked great.

If it is really bad you can take up the floor on the bad joist and cut the joist down the amount you need, then put your plywood subfloor back down. If it's not that bad then grind/sand it down and feather it out with some Ardex feather finish or similar product.

I have done this a few times. expose the beam strike a line and I used a hand held planer to whittle it down. works great
