I usually deer hunt with a classic featherweight in 280. I can’t imagine a better deer rifle.

I've got nearly the very rifle. Sako action, Belgian everything else, early 1960s Browning, no salt wood. Bought it New In Box back in the 1990s when its owner died and his son had no interest in it. $900.00. Yep, .243 Win.

I've only taken it to the range once (after mounting a scope), and it produced consistent sub 0.6" groups at 100 yards using standard grade, off the shelf, Remington 100 grain JSP deer hunting ammo. I cleaned it, lubed it, and put it back in the safe. Still there.

Only thing lacking is that you asked for a pencil barrel. This one has a medium barrel.

So you bought the collection ,but you regret not snagging one?

What’s the most useful twist rate in a 357 rifle/carbine?

The various manufacturers are from one extreme to another.

I have one in a McMillan Bridges Edge

Love that rifle.

Would love to find another 5 digit.

Would have thought an AK74 would be more your style.

A LH Sako or Steyr with a stutzen stock always grabs my attention. This LH Dakota 76 in 7mm-08 slipped through my impoverished fingers at auction once. Somebody else wanted it a lot more than me. At another auction, I missed out on a Ruger No. 1H in 404 Jeffery for the same reason.

A Winchester 1895 in 303 British that’s in really good condition doesn’t pop up too often:

I really like my Ruger No. 1S in 9.3x74r. But every time I see a double express rifle in that caliber, I always look at it wistfully even though I have no practical need for it. I hunt with single shots a lot so a nice Blaser K95 or Merkel K5 in something like 7x57r would get a lot of usage. Left-handed bolt actions in 257 Roberts, 300 H&H Magnum or 35 Whelen are a bit like unicorns so they’re always on the wishlist simply because they’re rare curiosities when they appear. Fortunately I have everything I need so I don’t feel like I’m missing anything that’s important to acquire. It’s still fun to dream & look.

I've got one of those, pre WWI, octagonal barrel, folding leaf express sights.

It's the one in the middle.

Great rifle and you can find ammo most any where. I wonder what they’re worth these days.

1936 REMINGTON 341-P - GOT IT

WINCHESTER MODEL 94 25-35 SRC WITH TANG SIGHT.

KIMBER MONTANA - .223

MARLIN 30 TK .30-30.

Sako wishlist-

AIV safari grade carbine in 9.3 x62. They exist, saw a pic of one that lives in Croatia. Sako A series carbine/ Kokotukki in .223/ 7-08/ 9.3x62 with the hunter style full-stocks. That would work for now. Oh and a box full of Warne Premier ringmounts for Sakos. Permanent and QD.

Winchester Model 71 Deluxe in the carbine version.

Can’t get more class than that IMO.

Have owned a few wish-list rifles over the decades, including one that was at the top of my list for a long time, a Griffin & Howe 1903 Springfield. Looked at several, but none had the stock-wood figure I hope for until this one came along a couple years ago:

[Linked Image]

But also own a few others, some already mentioned here by various posters, such as two pre-'64 Model 70 Winchesters in .257 Roberts, one a first-year production rifle; a pre-'64 Model 70 Featherweight .270; .30-40 Krags in original military condition--a rifle and carbine; a Winchester 1886 in .33 WCF, and a Winchester 92 in .25-20 and a 94 in .25-35, both made around 1900 with octagon barrels.

Eventually sold all of those, for whatever reason. The pair of pre-'64 .257s, for instances, were close to 10 pounds with scope, and I also have a Remington 722 in .257 which is a lot lighter. (It's somewhat odd to me, however, that the 722 and 721s are now considered "classics," since when they appeared in the late 1940s many gun writers, and others, hated them almost as much as some people hate Ruger American Rifles today.) I sold the pre-'64 Fwt. .270 because I ended up preferring my Jack O'Connor Tribute .270 more, partly because it has much nicer wood.

Still own quite a few others, including a pre-'64 Model 70 .375 H&H, a century old custom German 8x57JS on a 98 action, and a Savage 99f .358. Have owned several other 99s, including take-downs in .22 High-Power, .250, .300 and .303, but inherited the .358 from a hunting mentor, and eventually realized it was the only one of my 99s I was hunting with....

But am always on the lookout for more classics!
