I grew up idolizing O'Connor. That ol' 270 was my only centerfire for over 20 years. Last few years I've taken most deer with a .250 Savage or .257 Roberts, with a .243 thrown in for the heck of it. The only 30 or over I ever used was cast bullets out of a 30-30 for a couple years. In the planning stages for a 338-06 at the moment, but doubt it'll ever get used much on deer. If I hunted much where shots were long and elk were a possibility I might change my tune. Probably just use the good ol' 270 though.

For years I thought the 30-06 was the perfect cartridge for W.V.. Now I feel overgunned with it. The last few years I used a .260Rem and love it. I do plan on using a .35Rem next season and a 45-70 whenever. Someday maybe a 358Win or even a 338-06 for the heck of it.

Dave.

I'm a tweener in most cases. I don't care for really small calibers for anything other than varments, and I don't see the need for artillery for larger "big game". I'm thinking a 180 gr 30 cal anything is about adequate for most things that crawl on this continent.

I also tend to specialize a bit though. I like 7mms for deer, 30 cals for elk, 338 for anything bigger. Most of my rifles carry the magnum moniker but I'm tending to use more normal weight premuim bullets - 120-140 in the 7mm, 165-180 in 30's, 250 in 338.

I've gacked all the numbers and the "normal" weight premium bullets work great - shoot plenty flat, expand reliably, penetrate deeply. I don't need anything more than that.........

Except am seriously considering a 140 TSX 7mm elky load for this fall. smile

Stuck in the past with my Mausers. 6.5x55, 7x57, 8x57. It's not a bad thing though.
The only "modern" chambering I have is my .260. That's not a bad thing either.

The 280 Rem., 308 Win. and 35 Rem. have worked very well for me so far. I was going to get something heavier for wild boar. I'm going to stick with what I have for now though. I'd like to get a 338 Federal or 35 Whelen in the future.

I prefer 6.5 - 30 cals. Guess that makes me an O'connor
type?

I'm the kind of hunter who subscribes to the "one gun and very proficient with it" school of thought. Everything from prairie dogs to elk (even a moose once) with the same 270 Win.
It does just fine.

I'm very definitely a Keith man when things get serious.

I own rifles in nearly every caliber from .22 Hornet to .375 and .45-70 and have used them all at one time or another. I've taken deer with the Hornet and a .25-20 and try out different rifles (and handguns) regularly when general hunting or going after a "meat" doe, but I realize that the little guns are more of a stunt than a serious weapon. It CAN be done....but VERY carefully.

When things get serious or I am going after a trophy buck.....it's a .30-06 or better in my hands. If I'm going in the thickets after a particular buck or if hogs are the likely target, I'll often step up to the .358, .375 or .45-70.

"Killing" a deer is pretty easy. Anything from the .22LR on up will work when you can wait for a perfect shot, but when I'm hunting in a situation where waiting may not be an option and a mistake can't be risked.....The influence of Elmer takes over and the big bores come out to play.

For bigger game (elk, moose, ect)....the .338 and above are usually in my hands.

For deer I favor the .222, the .45-70, and several in between.

Most of my deer have fell to 7mm Rem Mag

I generally favor what are considered long range calibers.

I have used and like 25-06, 270 Win and my current favorite and only .30 I now posess .300 WSM.
