I brung a bunch of blankets and winter clothing in my pickup up to Pine Ridge in February of ‘84 while driving around looking at grad schools. Had to wait out a blizzard happening over in Colorado so I stayed four or five days with some longhairs trying to live traditional and stay out of trouble. I’m recalling a guy with four sets of Sundance scars on his chest.

Twenty years later I drove through again, north - south headed for Nebraska. The increase in population and housing was stunning, along with young teenagers pushing baby carriages, children with no life skills having children. On top of that the appalling rate of fetal alcohol syndrome. What I’ve been told too is the power of Cartels whatever operating n reservations north to south.

We had a couple come down and stay with us for a couple of months to escape the violence. He adapted well, found construction work, she couldn’t take it, it was like America was a foreign country.

So ya, I can understand Pine Ridge being in crisis. I will say if 50% are alcoholics whatever there’s the other 50% that ain’t. Don’t overlook the good people fighting the good fight.

From what I've seen, they have no incentive to change the bad things to positive things.

They have no incentive to better themselves.

Very socialistic society.

When ventures into profitable or needed areas happen, they usually lose interest and end up being part of the problem rather than the solution.

I know of one casino at least that is staffed nearly entirely of non-tribe white people. I asked why, and was told by a council member that the tribe members hired would not show up for work.

One encounter I had which involved many police on the rez at a situation, I was surprised to see white guys as the police. I again asked why, and he said most of them were white, and US veterans, and that the native people were corrupt, had no interest in policing themselves, and the candidate pool for police was nonexistent.

Even in the ranching end of the rez, where proceeds go to the common account to be distributed was a failure, and the rez ended up just leasing the land by parcels to white ranchers who would actually ranch it, and pay for the lease.

Socialism works... Right?

I have land in Wisconsin about 3 miles from the Menominee Res. I also have a cousin that married a half indian half Mexican... She is a very good mom and very hard worker. Her sisters and mother are too. One of her sisters is such a nice looking woman . Long straight hair, not in the least bit out of shape . They are all polite to me,, however , they are not in the least bit interested neither. These people make a good living . One works for United Health Care from home, one manages a coffee packing plant , mom works the casino. Many on the res , however are not like that however. I have property on the Red River that is near the res and a park that was donated to the town. You could go there for free and jump in the river and sit on the rocks . Me , brother and dad canoed there many times. Now it is closed cause there is litter, needles, sleeping bags and other things left from them. When I canoed it 45 yrs. ago ,, it was so prestine and unspoiled.

Being Indian is not all bad, no matter where you go, you always have a reservation…

That reservation has become a very dark place. And gets darker by day. The people have always demanded more independence, the bleeding hearts give it, and it comes to worse.
More death and terrible crime hidden there than any whites know except those that are close.

Do any of the squaws on the reservations look good enough for a white man to take notice of? Maybe a white sugar daddy could help climb a little higher on the poverty heap.

I was quite friendly with four smokin' hot native girls. Two were from way south closer to Texas than Montana tribes but they moved up here. Two local girls.

And as far as I know they all married and did just fine.

I always laugh when guys ask about the native girls. I marriied a half russian, half native beauty. Her immediate family are ranchers and accountants. She was an accountant, prior to retiring.

One of the guys I knew in the USARMY that lived on a rez told us a story about a young man demanding a large amount of money from his grandfather. He refused to give him a dime and the young man made a horrible scene in front of the neighbors, smashed windows out of his grandfathers mobile home, yelling and screaming etc. One of the neighbors drug the young man out of the mobile home and beat him to a pulp. Told him if he called the white men he would be back and beat him worse. The police never showed up

The guy who sells us logs has the firewood contract with the Rocky Boy rez.

It keeps him busy...but it can't be enough for all of them.

According to my friend who delivers propane....typically the rez customers only buy 50 to 100 bucks at a time.

It's gets a little western on nights like tonight.

Someone will get drunk or high, get beat up or thrown out...and plain ole freeze to death tonight.

I live 15 miles off the rez with lots of friends from there. The only successful ones come to our public school and excel in athletics. If they touch drugs or alcohol....they're screwed.

With all the other problems Browning Rez has they have alot of young woman and girls go missing.
I meet a rancher ( Browning Native) about 15 years ago who lets me shoot sage rats on his ground very nice guy and successful.

There is a Creek Reservation in south Alabama. The Poarch Reservation is on I-65. They have a great truck stop and I spent the night there in the big rig over 50 times. I guess they missed the orders from Andrew Jackson in 1836 to go to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears.

The reservation surrounds the truck stop, I saw a bunch of prosperous looking small houses and farms there among the Indians, only a few trailers. It didn't look at all like the run-down decrepit pics of reservations displayed in this thread. Like any big truck stop, there were dozens of employees there but none were Indians, mostly local white gals were employed there.

One day I saw a new hire there, big slender guy about 6-4, long straight dark black hair and olive-brown skin obviously an Indian, he was sweeping the parking lot. I went up to him and started talking to him. I asked him if he was a Creek and he said, no, he was Korean. Yeah, a six foot four Korean, I guess that was an inside joke.
