The first rifle that I had a brake put on was my .375 RUM. I'm not new to hunting or shooting (shot my first elk in 1967, did a tour in Vietnam, have done abut a dozen international hunts, and have shot several hundred thousand shotshells in Trap and Skeet competitions), but that beast kicked so hard that I couldn't shoot it enough to even sight in the scope. So I had a KDF brake installed on it. I also re-stocked it with a stock that fits me, and I installed a recoil reducer in the stock.
That combination reduced the recoil so that rifle is now comfortable to shoot, even prone, and I have taken it on two African and an Alaskan hunt.
Because of the amout of recoil recuction from the KDF brake on my .375 RUM, when I bought my .300 Weatherby I had a KDF brake installed on it before I fired my first shot through it. I also re-stocked it with a stock that fits me, and instlled a recoil reducer in it. It's loud, but what isn't that burns 85 grains on powder? It's felt recoil is less than the recoil of my 7mm RM rifle of the same weight.

If I use a brake, I like the one my gunsmith makes. Flat on top and bottom, holes are on the sides and perpendicular to the bore. Not bad for the shooter but certainly not pleasant for anyone to the sides though. Have one on my 338 RUM because I can’t take the recoil like I used to.

Gentry quiet brake, Vias( no longer made?). Wife has a Gentry on her 7mag. Bought the rifle used and it was already there. Shot so good we just left it. I have a factory one on a 300 wby, I do not mind it and neither seem overly loud. I have been next to my wife as she has shot both deer and antelope never seemed to bother my hearing. My 375, 338, 300 win have no brake. I dont mind the recoil and have never been overly sensitive to it. I do have a neck injury and had 2 fusions with need of another. I used to be a brake hater, now if I need it so be it.

I'm not much of a fan of brakes. I think, they look ugly and loud. I got this image from Bansner web page. This rifle is called "The Standard" the brake looks okay, I guess. Any of you fellas know what brand or type it might be? I going to call their shop and ask. Just wondered if anyone knew. I have made radial brakes (like the KDF), slotted brakes, integral brakes, brakes which could be deactivated, timed brakes, and muffled brakes. For simplicity of manufacture and installation, the KDF is best but a brake which vents to the side and up is more usable in the field. I've been making and installing brakes for almost forty years but I have never put one on one of my own rifles. The most effective brakes are not usually the most attractive; there is always a bit of a trade-off. GD
