I will most likely end up w/ a 300 RUM. The 30-378 Wby is very intriguing. I would like to hear comments from those familiar with one or both calibers. Recoil is normally not a factor but I never fired larger than 338. I have looked at the Rem Sendero and Wby MK V SS. Both rifles are 8.5 lbs. I would use them on elk etc. and weight is not a big factor, horses do most of the work. You folks have good info. here. Thanks.

RL,

Welcome to the Campfire and enjoy your stay

Both 300RUM and 30-378Wthby are exceptional long range cartridges in capable hands. With the velocities that are capable with both these rounds, they beg for stoutly constructed bullets of various makes. Either rifle you choose would be acceptable platforms for the RUM or Wthby. But it would seem that the Wthby platform is less desirable though I have no first hand experience with them. To address recoil, both can/will hurt you if you're not careful. If possible shoot them first to see if the recoil is an acceptable level for you before making a committment to a rifle.

Good Luck

I own two 300 ultramags and have fired both a trg-s and an accumark in 30-378.The 30-378 produced about 100fps more in the accumark than my ultramags with the trg-s only about 40fps faster than my ultramags all with handloads. The felt recoil is noticeably less with my ultramags than with the accumark and is the harshest with the trg-s.Accuracy is better with both of my ultramags but that is probably due more to the better quality of the barrels and workmanship than to the cartridge itself. The really big difference is in cost of brass where I can buy ultramag brass for 1/3 the cost of the 30-378.I also have a magazine capacity of three whereas the accumark magazine holds only two rounds. The 30-378 does produce slightly more velocity but I am still prefer the ultramag for the cost of components, less recoil, larger magazine capacity and the fact that it is available in actions that I prefer over the trg-s and weatherby.

In my expieriance the RUMS have been more accurate and only about 100 -150 FPS behind the 30-378

I'll also cast my vote for the 300 RUM. Mine shoots .5" groups or BETTER (when I do my part) with 180 Swifts Scir's (3300) and 200 Nosler Partitions (almost 3200).

As far as a choice between the Rem and Weatherby rifles ?? No contest, the Rem wins hands down in the accuracy dept., IMO

Got a whole gun safe full of Rems, they all shoot well under 1" and all but one started out as factory, SS in tupperware, now sitting in HS or Mc Millan stocks, with no other mods except for trigger adjustments. One is a full custom that is no doubt more accurate than I am !!

Have a buddy who has a Weatherby Ultralight in 300 Weatherby that we cannot get to shoot better than minute of pie plate and that ain't no bull either. That is even with a bedding job from a local 'smith. My buddy 163bc had a "magnum headache" after a day at the bench trying to get that thing to shoot !!

I'll take any of my factory Rem's against any Weatherby, including the sub MOA, any day. As a matter of fact you can buy two Rem 700 SS BDL's in tupperware, add an HS or McMillan and still have a few bucks left for the price of one Sub-MOA.

No thanks.

Tony.

Thanks for your input. I knew, from balistic charts, the 300 RUM is very close to the 30-338 but I didn't know there was a substantial recoil difference. The 300 RUM is impressive to be able to maintain well over 2,000 ft-lbs of energy at 400+ yds with a 200 or 180 gr. bullet. That's a rifle that will shoot a lot farther than I can.

I think the Ultra is the better mousetrap.

Both have plenty of "Oooomph" and my focal point would be on accuracy,as everything else will happily follow that.

No secret that I have zero love for HS handles, especially in the VS/VSSF/Sendero pattern. Though they are great at magnifying felt recoil, should that be of keen interest(grin).

Am still of the opinion that the 338Ultra is the "best" Ultra and a rifle so chambered that was 8.75-ish lbs all up,could be made to do most anything you wished and do it with great authority and at most any distance.

It is a damned great cartridge, but there are no flies on a Big 30,that's for sure..................

Below is recoil (ft-lbs) I obtained from Chuck Hawk's website. The .30-378 is a stout round.

300 Ultra Mag. (180 at 3230) 8.5# rifle: 32.8

.30-378 Wby. Mag. (180 at 3450) 9.75# rifle: 55.1

I call BULL! If it won't shoot MOPP then send it back to Weatherby ... if it is truely the rifles problem they will fix it. Weatherby guarantees that thier rifles will shoot 1.5" @ 100 yards.

I have nothing against SUCKS ... got one myself ... but to call the ROY's garbage? Please! Secure from cranial rectal inversion!

I've spent the day at the bench with my .300 Roy and never leave with a headache ... tender shoulder, but not a head ache. If I'd ever buy a Past shield, I could forego the tender shoulder too. Nevermind ... missed the ultralight part .... That could be down right nasty. I would be willing to bet the inacuracy may be do some flinchitis.

You guys just gave me a great idea! I think I`ll start marketing a shooting bench with a seat belt.
I agree with Stick on the 338 ultra, but if you want something to hang onto, try shooting my TRG 338 Lapua, with 250grn. pills.

ava,

Just to set the record straight...I never said that Roy's rifles suck.

On the contrary, I have always wanted to buy one, especially in 270WM. I have looked long and hard for a good price on an Ultralight or SBGM in 270WM, but I can't justify the price for the performance that I have seen in other Weatherby's at the range.

This is coming from someone who doesn't want to know how much $$ I have sitting in my gun safe !!

My point was, that from a price/performance perspective, you can't beat the Remingtons. Plus, I have yet to whitness a Weatherby outshoot any of my Remingtons.

I am sure that Weatherby stands behind their products, being the fine company that they are. It is just hard for ME to justify the extra price of the Weatherby's, just for the sake of saying that I own one.

hicountry,

Understood. Can't say I really disagree with you regarding the price of the Weatherby's. Mine was sitting on the shelf for over a year I was told and I purchased it for nearly $400 below book retail (which is the price of some of Reminton's better guns). Mine is the Sporter with the Claro stock. I feel it was a great deal and the rifle is more accurate than I. It holds groups greater than an inch but less than 1.5" regularly. It has gone below one inch a couple times ... not sure who's fluke it was mine or the rifle's. All this is with factory fodder, be it from Weatherby or Federal. Hoping with some handloading (& lots of practice) those groups will shrink ... if they don't I'm not going to worry about it for now, even at 1.5" its nothing to fret about at 200 yards (my self imposed limit ... not the rifles).

Went to the ye ole shoppe the other day and looked at the prices of the synthetics (donor for a .375) and about pooped myself. What was around $680 a couple of years ago is now close to $900. Too much ... I will agree. But I have years to worry about that project.

avagadro,

I have been real lucky with my Rem purchases, all were new. I paid $480 for my 7 RUM SS, + another $200 for a stock transplant. My newest is my 338 RUM SS which I paid about $490, then there are : $465 for my 300 RUM SS, $450 for my 7 STW SS DM, and all got stock upgrades. So I guess I have been averaging under $700 for SS REMs, including upgrading the stocks to HS or McMillans. You can't touch an equivalent equiped Weatherby for that, especially new.

And, the dag gone things ALL shoot way under 1" with handloads. I haven't even started bedding them yet !!! Hell, I am not sure I want to mess with them !!!

But, I sure wouldn't mind a go at a SBGM or Ultralight in 270 WM !!!

RL, save yourself some money and range headache and buy a Rem 700 in 300 RUM. You'll be glad you did. I have witnessed first hand on several ocassions the field performance on game of the 300 RUM. Impressive is all that I can say. At the range they are performers too with exceptional accuracy. SF

Why are you only looking at 30 calibers for elk ? The 338 is generally considered ideal for elk. There is the 338/06, 338 win, 340 weatherby, 3389 ultramag, and 338/378.
