The word respect used to mean we held someone in high regard or admired them. Over the last few decades the word had degenerated into meaning tolerate or tolerance. We used to respect the police and held the FBI in high regard. They were respected. Almost any clergy was respected. Now we are told to respect everyone’s opinion on everything. We have hunters telling other hunters they should respect the way they hunt. I couldn’t care less if a guy climbs up in a tree and ambushes his deer. Just as much I don’t care if a guy learns to read the wind and kills his deer from 600 yards. I admire the patience of the ambusher and the ability of long range hunter. But I don’t respect them. I don’t even know them.
We encounter religious people who claim not to be religious and we are told to respect them. Why? Some are so full of nonsense they can’t defend their position without resorting to emotional outburst. I remember one guy told me, “Don’t raise your voice, reinforce your argument.” He, of course, would not be respected by those touting respect.

What's up with the pond?
Ever make a decision on what kind of fish? Ask ODFW?

What's up with the pond?
Ever make a decision on what kind of fish? Ask ODFW? I have my eye on 77 acres for a decent price. It has three streams on it. Based on what the people here have said, I can make a more intelligent decision on how big the pond should be, how deep it should be and the kind of fish I should be put in it and who to talk to locally about stocking it. I guess I should have thanked everybody for their input. I'll see if I can scrounge up that thread and do that.

If you wanna see a [bleep] fit - tell someone that respect is earned - not owed. Fewer and fewer people seem to earn my respect, these days.

Be sure to check the water rights with the property. As they say in the West....."Whiskey's for drinkin', water's for fightin'". The property might have 3 streams, but not have any rights to use it, especially "storage" for a pond.
I don't know Oregon-I do know that here in Colorado it is a complicated system.
Good luck!

LHS That was pointed out to him in the pond thread. Up to him to research it now.

I guess I should have thanked everybody for their input. I'll see if I can scrounge up that thread and do that. Rich, be aware, there is more to building a pond these days than just pushing some dirt around to make a dam. Idaho has a pretty strict permitting process about such. I am sure Oregon is much more stringent. Heck, we are severely limited on how much ground water we can expose. Example, If you are excavating a gravel pit, and the pit fills with ground water. One might think it a nice addition to the property, and stock it with fish. But no. If the pond is over a specific square footage in surface area, it must be permitted. Permits may often be denied and the pond filled in with dirt until no water is exposed. The reason is ascribed to evaporative loss of ground water. Also, dams are strictly regulated. An improperly constructed dam can fail and endanger properties downstream. An irrigation dam failed on a property I was once employed on. It took the owners years to get plans for a replacement dam approved. In the meantime their croplands went dry and died. This does not even begin to address the issue of water rights. There is much research to do before starting upon such a project.
People who choose to brew up their own storms bitch loudest about the rain.

The word respect used to mean we held someone in high regard or admired them. Over the last few decades the word had degenerated into meaning tolerate or tolerance. - - - - - etc.. I was taught that "respect", as a verb, is the act honoring, giving deference to to, abiding by and sometimes even obeying the position of another person - one who has earned that position of respect through exercise of excellent values and good/wise judgment. Yes - in these times, the term and concept seem to be interpreted and used in many other ways - some of those way off the original mark. Nothing new - this kind of drift and change of usage has been the case in most languages. Only rigorous adherence to meaning in usage can prevent such drift, and most among us simply do not devote enough thought to meaning and word choice - so we drift. I like the word, It symbolizes a lot and wish I could see and hear more of the real thing each day.
