I have Kimbers and I have a Weatherby; both are excellent. I'd keep the Weatherby and save up to buy a Kimber, if that is what you want. In the long run, you'll have both and won't regret having made a trade.

I gave some thought to buying the Montana outright but my main goal is to reduce the herd.

Go for it. That's a good trade. Much better triggers on the Kimber 8400s than the Weatherbies.

Keep the Wby. no real difference in calibers but it shoots good...I'd rather be lukewarm to a good shooter than cold towards a gun that you may end up detesting...Speaking of which, is there a reason WHY you are only lukewarm towards such a nice gun??? Is it the caliber??? Fit??? Name???

There are a few reasons that I am not fond of the Weatherby.
#1 I do not reload as of yet and I am looking for a more mainstream caliber such as the .270Win.
#2 at times I have a difficult time aligning my eye with the scope on the old humpback. I have found out that I can shoulder a straighter stocked gun more readily.
#3 The Kimber just seemed to feel better in my hands and come up to my shoulder better.

Dump the Weatherby.

That right there is all the reason you need to own that rifle. Thats what I love about both my Kimber of Oregon and my Al Biesen Mauser. I find that these are the first two rifles I grab because they fit me. A lot of people are advising on what they would use, but it has to fit you, not them.

Just the notion that you asked the initial question says alot. You know you cannot live without the Kimber now that the idea is in your head (heart?). I'd think a straight up trade would be a good deal for you. Shop owner must already have a customer that wants a 280. I have both guns and they shoot equal, but the Kimber is the better of the two to hold, fire, carry. But, hey, this gun thang ain't about opinions! Get or keep the ones that in FACT light YOUR fire. Don't gettem because someone you don't know says so. You don't need your Mom's permission or ours. Do or un-do a deal and tell us what happened.

Most generally its been my experience that when the gun trader wants to trade you straight across he thinks he has you in the bag,thier in bussiness to come out ahead or on top in any deal,He is not in bussiness because you need a rifle.............

The only reason that I am riding the fence on this issue is the fact that I have read so many horror stories about Kimbers! I wish that Remington or Ruger made a rifle that fit me as well as the Kimber!

Sell the Weatherby and build a custom off a Rem 700.

Fit and feel is much more important than all the ballistic gack - if the Kimber fits you, make the trade. If the Kimber's not a shooter, I expect a recrown and skim bed will make it right. I'd rather have a 1.5 inch shooter that fits me than a .5 that doesn't every time. Of course a tack driver that fits is the best, and you can have it with the Kimber, but the Weatherby is never going to fit you, no matter how it shoots.

I said before that I would keep the Weatherby but I am not you. Once you get that wild hair up your ass for something you just gotta have it. It is fine to seek advice but in the end do what your heart desires!!!

It's already been stated, but go with the rifle you like the best.

Cartridge doesn't matter, they are one in the same.

Which one fits better? Handles better? Go with your instinct.
Sometimes you just have to scratch the itch.

Put a different stock on the weatherby and keep it. Unless you want to make the store owner one happy man.

If this trend continues your gonna trade the rifle. Right? So why not go for the Kimber! I can't think of a better rifle out there to trade for. Except maybe a TI or a lightweight Sako.

If your like me once you've carried a lightweight your not gonna even consider anything else. My KM 300wsm is the finest rifle I've ever owned. I highly doubt I'll ever seperate with it.

Straight accros trade!! Heck if it don't shoot perfect send it to Hill Country Rifles. If it has to go to HCR then you just bought a Kimber Montana in 270 for less than $500 dolars!! (Well sorta) Never owned a 270 but have seen on many occasion what it will do on deer and elk.

my personal feeling is that if your not completely enamored with the weatherby toss it in the trunk and go get something to play with... you can always buy another and my money says you wont.

i love the 280 and am not a fan of the 270 short (it is fine, just dont like the number ) i would have that gun swapped so fast... the weatherby stock and action leave a ton to be desired (imo)... the kimber points nicely, has a great stock and very clean and nicely finished metal....

go get it and have at it.... your nuts not too.....
