Anyone besides myself run into issues with a shneider barrel order?
Sending it back for the second time tomorrow. Very basic oversites on Gary's part(like length & diameter).
Now,(because of all these setbacks~5mo+2more)I'll be lucky to even finish the rifle project, as my gunsmiths must be questoning MY integrity by now.
Just curious if I'm alone on this one?
What would you do? Order a Hart?

Can you say PAC-NOR? Would have been my first choice from the get go.

Thought of PAC-NOR first. But through communication with them, it didn't take long to figure out that they either wouldn't or couldn't ensure or verify internal dimensions. Common with most insta-barrel makers. And exactly why half the people shooting them either love 'em or aren't impressed at all. To me, thats no better than factory. Abstract.
For instance, I wouldn't trade the factory barrel on a browing A2 of mine for 10 kriegers, simply because I already know that by pure miracle of miracles, its more accurate.
However, In building a new, hi-dollar custom, I'd take a Krieger over 10 PAC-NORS for the same money. Just because I know that I can pick up a phone, ask Krieger for basic internal dimensions, and they'll actually know!
This may or may not be right for my project, but at least I'll know up front rather than chancing the abstract.
Unfortunate for me, krieger wouldnt work in this case.
Schneider would have. Unfortunate for me again.

Be curious to know which demands couldn't be met?..................

Schneider makes the best "button rifled" barrel for my money.
When I shop barrel makers, I want an outfit that makes one barrel...Their very best, not grade A, B, or
C. Just sell me your best barrel. Outfits like Kreiger
will throw grade B & C barrels in the trash. Pac-Nor will
sell them.

That said, my favorite barrels are cut rifled
Boots, Rock, Krieger, Morrsion all make me happy.

Quote
With Pac-Nor it was tolerances. I could have up to .002 under in groove diameter, but zero over. This, in preperation for Blackstar's taper polishing.
Pac-Nor claims to lap each barrel. However, they said that they have no control over final dimensions, and that their tolerances were +/- .005 throughout. No amount of interest on my part, would sway them towards lapping to dimension.
Which to me means -we don't measure, don't know, don't care. -go away-

This is a cut and paste from Pac-Nor's website:
"PAC-NOR manufactures two grades of barrels, 'Standard-Match' and 'Super Match' with tolerances uniform from one end to the other, bore diameters within .0003 and grooves within .0001. "

"PAC-NOR has the capability to make barrels with special requirements such as twist, rifling configuration, and bore and groove dimensions. We have made barrels for various ballistic labs, and arms and ammunition manufacturers. Since most of the tooling must be specially made, this type of work is done only on a written quote basis. Please supply us with drawings for your requirements by mail or fax so that we may accurately process your quote."

Im assuming then that the .0003" and .0001" variances refer to a plus or minus tolerance dimension from one end of the tube to the other, but that the actual diameter from which these figures vary could be anywhere within .005 of what the buyer specifies? So if you say you want a barrel with an exact groove diameter of .3080" you might get one from .3075" to .3085"?

Based on the second quote it is curious why you got the we dont care, go away attitude. Not saying yea or nay as obviously I wasnt there, but that doesnt sound like them. Especially when I understand the second quote to mean - "we can do it if you want to pay for it." Or perhaps I am misunderstanding something in your post?

I copy/pasted his Post and sent it to Chris and asked for his thoughts on the matter.

Am awaiting a reply and I'll share it...................

Just got off the horn with Chris,so as to confirn permission to paste his reply in entirety. Needless to say,he happily granted it(grin)and I quote:

{"As I can see from the way this written,the author has never made barrels,tell him from all of the Pac-Nor crew we will buy him a round trip plane ticket and we will strap a rubber apron on him a give him a real life experience,in barrel making.(no fooling) If he's agreeable have him contact me personally for arrival dates and plane schedules.Like the old saying "talks cheap,whiskey cost money" Chris S Dichter-President"}

Mikecr,

I'm just reading this thread for the education, but it seems a little odd you're doting on Schneider barrel dimensions and QA after receiving a couple that were incorrect.

Forgive me my nonsense, as I also forgive the nonsense of those that think they talk sense.

Aha, the truth will out.

You talked to Penny - a very nice lady, but she is too busy eating the candy and smelling the flowers that Mtn Hunter sends her so he can get his barrels shipped in 8 days while the rest of us have to wait a couple of months.

Everything you say is suspect, when you change a tune that quickly.

Initially you stated some crass commentary that lead one to believe you'd submitted a blueprint that couldn't mechanically be met. Then when questioned,it became obvious that you were blowing smoke and you retreated hastily.

Someone once said you could bullshit the fans, but cain't bullshit the players. All apt,IMHO.

Ahhhhh...the power of the computer age................(grin)

I think you just confirmed that you are both stupid AND funny. That respectfully submitted,as I don't impress easily.

What specs did you request, that couldn't be met? More interestingly, how did you measure them,to deduce they were askew?

Do I sense you wish to order a barrel, subject it to your mechanical aptitude(contouring/etc.) and hold them accountable for the end result?

I think if you stop now,you may be able to wait long enough to be taken with a copious amount of salt. Should you persist,ALL bets are off...................
