Just a heads up, there are some sacred cows around here with some posters. Some of the "sacred cows" are;

Pac-Nor barrels
Barnes bullets
Leupold scopes
Remington rifles

mikecr,
You are in for a big suprise. All the mumbo-jumbo about tight tolerances and what barrel maker can meet those specs does not mean your rifle is going to be a tackdriver. Several 'smiths have stated to me most button-rifled barrels such as Lilja or Hart have bores which are seldom centered...........but they shoot straight anyways. I don't know what you are building but there are plenty of barrelmakers out there who build benchrest quality barrels including Pac-Nor. Whichever one is the equivalent of a NASCAR built race engine is anybody's guess. Take a look at each of the shooting sport's categorys and you find a number of different barrelmakers in the winner's circle. In other words there are plenty to choose from..............

I think you should let him build what he wants, how he wants.

He said something I think most missed. Pac-Nor didn't give him the warm fuzzies. 'Nuff said in my book. That is an intangible that can mean more than many tangibles when it comes to making final selections. Pretty much all the major barrel makers can provide you with a superb tube. Finding one that inspires confidence is a good way to differentiate among otherwise worthy contenders, and a savvy marketing tactic for the mfg.

Lots of folks around here really dig Pac-Nor, and that's fine. But just because someone doesn't get the willies from the same set of componentry doesn't mean that he should be laughed off the board. If mike gets the warm fuzzies from a Savage action in something other than a Pac-Nor, I say good for him. Especially if it shoots, which it likely will.

The rest is aesthetics, and they don't make meat.

Hey Mike, stick around, and check out Krieger. Put whatever in that ug-leee Savage action if you must, then let us now how she groups. These guys all know their stuff, and are good folks to boot, but they have their biases, as we all do. I think it's time someone like you shows them something other than a 700/PacNor/McMillan/Leupold can shoot, as we all know that that formula regularly does (Stick is right on that score).

6-WSM? Shee-it. It ain't what I'd build, for sure, but I just talked to Dan at MRC, and I think a .338 WSM is next on my list. When's the crucifixion?

Don't give in mike. The jackals will calm down once they see you ain't a'feard.

And one other thing. In the immortal words of Forrest Gump:

"Stupid is as stupid does."

I bet she'll shoot. Might be ugly as hell, but she'll shoot.

This must be out of some movie for you Stick...the Perfect Joke or sumthin like it. Let's see...Newbie fella here disses PACNOR, wants top-notch accuracy, disses PacNor, and to top it all of, he wants to build a Custom Savage. Did I mention he dissed PacNor?
I am not taking sides here...forget it. I own a Savage, after all. But man, this is gonna be laughing material for a long while. Good stuff to poke at Stick...

Guy down the road from me as a reamer and dies for the 6WSM. He hasn't built one yet, but a pard of his did for long range varmints/coyotes. He like the accuracy enough that he used it to take a bull elk with an 87gr Vmax in the melon. Definitely not what I would consider a proper elk rifle, but he made meat with his just as I did with mine.
